Tigers hire Kyle Hendricks as special assistant at 36, first Cubs lifer to cross front-office lines

Scott Harris adds ex-Dartmouth pitcher to analytics group as rotation-development specialist; front office now skews younger than field staff.

Kyle Hendricks, who threw 2,071.1 innings across 12 seasons for the Chicago Cubs, joined the Detroit Tigers front office as a special assistant on Tuesday. He is 36 years old. The hire was announced without a corresponding playing retirement statement, though Hendricks last pitched in September 2024 and did not receive a major-league contract offer this winter.

Hendricks spent his entire career in Chicago after the Cubs acquired him from Texas in the 2012 Ryan Dempster trade. He won a World Series ring in 2016, led the National League in ERA that season at 2.13, and posted a career 3.68 ERA across 320 appearances. His fastball averaged 86.4 mph last season. The Tigers announced he will work with the pitching development group and assist with advance scouting, reporting to general manager Scott Harris. The team did not disclose compensation.

The move reflects Harris's preference for hiring former players with statistical literacy over traditional scouting backgrounds. Hendricks graduated from Dartmouth with an economics degree in 2011 and has spoken publicly about using TrackMan data to refine his changeup grip. The Tigers now employ six former players in their front office, up from two when Harris arrived in September 2022. The average age of Detroit's baseball operations staff is 38, compared to an average manager age across MLB of 51. Hendricks becomes the youngest special assistant in the organization.

The hire also signals Harris is building redundancy into his pitching infrastructure. Detroit's rotation posted a 3.79 ERA last season, sixth in the American League, but lost swing-and-miss depth when Eduardo Rodriguez exercised his opt-out clause in November. The Tigers have four pitchers under 25 on the 40-man roster, all of whom throw harder than Hendricks did but lack his command profile. Hendricks will likely focus on pitch sequencing and game planning for this group, though the Tigers have not confirmed his specific duties.

Harris has now made 14 front-office hires since taking over, the most of any GM hired in the 2022 cycle. Detroit's analytics department has grown from nine employees to 17, while the scouting staff has shrunk from 23 to 19. The shift mirrors decisions at Houston and Tampa Bay, where front offices have prioritized internal development over external acquisition. The Tigers' minor-league system ranks 12th in Baseball America's latest organizational talent rankings, up from 20th in 2022.

Hendricks joins a front office that has spent conservatively despite owner Christopher Ilitch's repeated public commitments to competing. Detroit's opening-day payroll was $118 million in 2025, 19th in MLB. Harris has signed only one free agent to a contract exceeding $15 million annually during his tenure. The Tigers finished 79-83 last season, missing the playoffs for the 10th consecutive year.

Watch whether Hendricks's role expands into external recruiting. The Tigers have struggled to sign top amateur talent, landing only one first-round pick in the top five under Harris despite holding early selections in 2023 and 2024. Hendricks's Cubs tenure and reputation for preparation could help Detroit pitch high-school arms hesitant to commit to a rebuilding organization. His first public appearance in the role is expected at the MLB Draft Combine in Phoenix in late May, where the Tigers will interview 37 prospects. The team's first-round pick this June is currently slotted ninth overall.

The takeaway
Tigers add rotation specialist to analytics group, continuing Harris's shift from traditional scouting to player-development infrastructure.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
