Tigers hire Kyle Hendricks as special assistant, zero days after Cubs release

The front-office conversion track starts earlier now—Hendricks moves upstairs before his playing options expire.

The Detroit Tigers named Kyle Hendricks special assistant to baseball operations on Tuesday, installing the 36-year-old right-hander in the front office 12 days after the Chicago Cubs declined his $16.5 million option for 2025. Hendricks threw his last pitch in September. He has not announced retirement.

The hire is notable for its speed. Hendricks logged a 5.92 ERA across 24 starts last season and carried a 3.68 career mark over 268 games, all with Chicago. He was a free agent. He had offers to pitch. Detroit president Scott Harris instead offered him a suit. Hendricks accepted without taking January meetings. The role reports directly to Harris and assistant general manager Sam Menzin, who joined from Houston in 2022. Hendricks will work with pitching development, amateur scouting, and—per one person familiar—act as a conduit between the analytics group and field staff, a translation layer Detroit has needed since Harris centralised decision-making two winters ago.

This is the new shape of front-office succession planning. Theo Epstein went from the Cubs to a senior adviser role in 2020 at 46. Hendricks is 36 and still holding a radar gun. The logic is identical: hire the credible voice before someone else does, before the skill atrophies, before the pitcher decides he wants one more year in Triple-A. Hendricks has 12 years of big-league room reads, knows which coaches players trust, which drills actually translate, which stats get ignored in March and weaponised in July. That knowledge has a half-life. Detroit is banking it now.

The timing also matters for Detroit's 2025 roster build. The Tigers broke .500 last season for the first time since 2016 and made the playoffs as a wild card. They employ six starting pitchers on guaranteed contracts and are aggressively shopping for bullpen arms and a right-handed designated hitter. Hendricks will not be in the room when Harris makes those calls, but he will be in the room when Detroit evaluates which 22-year-old Dominican righty in Low-A is worth the 40-man add in November, or whether the mechanical tweak that worked for Hendricks in 2016—when he led MLB with a 2.13 ERA—applies to Reese Olson now. That is the actual job.

Watch whether Hendricks appears in big-league camp in Lakeland this spring. If he is coaching up Ty Madden or Jackson Jobe on sequencing before April, the role is real. If he stays in the Detroit office working Excel, it is ceremonial. The distinction will be visible by mid-March. Also watch the November front-office hiring cycle. If Hendricks recruits another recently retired Cubs pitcher—say, a 33-year-old lefty with eight years of service time—it signals Detroit is building a pipeline, not making a gesture. The next pitching coach hire will clarify everything.

The takeaway
Detroit converts Hendricks to front office at 36, capturing institutional memory before he takes another mound offer or retires into obscurity.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
