Verstappen can engineer around the penalty; Lawson's audition just got narrower with limited grid recovery options.

73 minutes

Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson will each start three positions lower than qualified at Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix after stewards ruled their Friday practice collision violated sporting conduct standards. The penalties—applied despite no mechanical damage—mark the first time in 18 months the FIA has sanctioned contact during practice sessions.
The incident occurred 41 minutes into FP2 when Lawson, on a cool-down lap, held his racing line through Turn 12 as Verstappen approached on a hot lap. Verstappen's front wing made contact with Lawson's right-rear tire at approximately 290 km/h. Both drivers continued without damage. Stewards reviewed onboard footage and team radio for 73 minutes before issuing identical three-place grid penalties, citing "dangerous and unacceptable driving" under Article 12.2.1(f) of the sporting regulations. Neither driver attended the hearing in person; team representatives appeared alone.
The timing compounds Red Bull Racing's constructor championship defense. Verstappen enters Mexico trailing Lando Norris by 57 points in the drivers' standings but leading McLaren by just 40 points in the constructor fight. A three-place penalty likely drops Verstappen from an expected top-three qualifying position to sixth or seventh on a circuit where overtaking historically clusters around pit strategy windows rather than on-track passes. Red Bull has won two of the last three Mexico races from pole position; the exception came in 2021 when Mercedes swept the podium after Verstappen qualified third and finished second.
Lawson's penalty carries different implications. The 22-year-old New Zealander is completing a five-race tryout in the RB seat vacated by Daniel Ricciardo, with Red Bull's 2025 driver lineup still undecided. Team principal Christian Horner told media Thursday that Lawson's Mexico performance would "weigh heavily" in year-end decisions. Lawson qualified 12th in Austin last week and finished 16th after a first-lap puncture. A penalty that drops him from a likely Q2 appearance into the elimination zone reduces his opportunity to demonstrate racecraft against Yuki Tsunoda, his primary internal benchmark.
The FIA's willingness to penalize practice-session contact represents a policy shift. The last comparable penalty came at Monza 2023, when Kevin Magnussen received a three-place drop for impeding George Russell during FP3. Since then, stewards have issued warnings or fines for similar incidents. Friday's decision follows FIA race director Niels Wittich's September memo reminding teams that all sessions fall under sporting regulations, not just qualifying and race starts. Paddock speculation links the enforcement change to commercial pressure from Liberty Media, which pays the FIA an annual $120 million sanctioning fee and wants practice sessions to carry competitive weight for Drive to Survive storylines and Friday ticket sales.
Red Bull can still optimize around Verstappen's penalty through strategic qualifying. If Verstappen qualifies second, the drop lands him fifth—behind both Ferraris but ahead of the Mercedes pair, who have struggled with low-downforce setup at altitude. If he takes pole, the penalty becomes tactically useful: Red Bull can bolt on a fresh power unit during parc fermé, taking an additional five-place penalty to start eighth with a strong engine for the long run to Turn 1 while competitors nurse older units. Honda has two fresh power units allocated to Verstappen's pool; one remains unused since Monza.
Lawson's penalty offers no similar upside. RB's car sits seventh-fastest on long-run pace, per GPS delta analysis from Friday. Starting outside the points locks Lawson into a recovery drive against Williams and Haas, teams unlikely to make strategic errors that gift positions. His best case becomes finishing where he qualified, nullifying the weekend's evaluative purpose.
Qualifying begins Saturday at 3:00pm local time. Verstappen has not qualified outside the top three in Mexico since 2018. Lawson has qualified in Q3 once during his five career starts, at Zandvoort 2023 as Ricciardo's injury replacement. Red Bull's constructor decision deadline sits November 24, three days after the Abu Dhabi finale.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
