Lawson and Tsunoda Exit Monza Qualifying P16 and P17 After Zandvoort Lift Evaporates

Racing Bulls' double-points finish in Netherlands dissolves into midfield anonymity at high-speed Italian circuit.

Liam Lawson qualified P16, Yuki Tsunoda P17 at Monza, erasing the momentum from Zandvoort where both drivers scored points and briefly reminded paddock observers why Red Bull keeps a second team. The Racing Bulls pair managed 1:21.676 and 1:21.782 respectively in Q1, failing to advance while teammates at sister outfit Red Bull Racing locked the second row.

The circuit explains most of it. Monza demands low-drag setup and clean air through Lesmo and Parabolica; Racing Bulls arrived with a chassis optimized for Zandvoort's mechanical grip sections and found nothing translated. Lawson reported understeer through the high-speed Curva Grande sequence. Tsunoda's final Q1 lap dissolved in traffic behind a Williams. Both drivers were 0.8 seconds off the Q2 cutoff, a gap that reads as aero philosophy rather than driver error.

What matters is the timing. Lawson entered the weekend with 6 points from four races since replacing Daniel Ricciardo at the summer break. Zandvoort delivered P9 and legitimate pace in clean air. That result briefly elevated his case for the 2025 Red Bull Racing seat currently held by Sergio Pérez, who qualified P8 at Monza but remains 85 points behind teammate Max Verstappen. A second consecutive points finish would have complicated Red Bull's winter decision calculus. Instead, Lawson starts P16 on a circuit where overtaking relies on DRS and slipstream, neither of which help a car lacking straightline speed.

Tsunoda's position is different but adjacent. He secured his 2025 Racing Bulls seat in July but remains a candidate for promotion if Red Bull concludes Pérez's form won't recover. His Monza qualifying time was 0.106 seconds slower than Lawson's despite running an identical setup. The gap is small but consistent with a pattern: Tsunoda has out-qualified Lawson twice in four weekends since the New Zealander arrived. For a driver positioning himself as the obvious internal promotion, matching rather than dominating a rookie across machinery-sensitive weekends creates ambiguity Red Bull's management doesn't reward.

Racing Bulls sits P8 in the constructors' championship with 34 points, 21 points behind Haas and 18 points ahead of Alpine. The team's budget and prize money for 2025 depend on holding that position. Monza offers 25 points to the winner; a double-DNF from Haas and double-points from Racing Bulls would close the gap to single digits. But starting P16 and P17 makes that arithmetic implausible unless weather intervenes or the field experiences unusual attrition.

The cars will run low-downforce rear wings Sunday, a configuration that improves straightline speed but reduces stability under braking into the chicanes. Lawson and Tsunoda both struggled with rear-end instability during Friday practice. Laurent Mekies, Racing Bulls' team principal, confirmed Saturday the squad will prioritize race starts and early positioning over setup changes that might compromise tire management across the 53-lap distance.

Baku arrives in two weeks. The street circuit's long straights and 90-degree corners suit Racing Bulls' chassis philosophy better than Monza's flowing geometry. Lawson scored his first points there in 2023 during his previous three-race substitute stint. Tsunoda finished P7 last year. Both drivers will spend the Monza race running experimental tire strategies and collecting setup data for Azerbaijan, which carries more weight for their 2025 prospects than Sunday's result sheet.

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko watches from the energy station hospitality unit. He was photographed Saturday reviewing telemetry with Racing Bulls engineers, unusual for a non-race weekend visit. The next performance review meeting is scheduled for the week after Singapore. Lawson and Tsunoda have four races to build a case. Monza won't be Exhibit A.

The takeaway
Racing Bulls' drivers start Monza's race from the back half of the grid, complicating their pitch for promotion as Red Bull's seat evaluations accelerate into autumn.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
