JPMorgan Chase Takes IOC TOP Slot at $1B+ Through 2034, First Bank in Olympic History

The deal rewrites exclusivity rules and signals Visa's quiet retreat from financial services monopoly after four decades.

JPMorgan Chase signed a $1B+ agreement to become the International Olympic Committee's first global banking partner, joining the TOP sponsorship program through 2030 with extensions covering the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games and Utah 2034 Winter Games. The bank will also serve as a founding partner of LA28, embedding its brand in the domestic organizing committee structure before the global activation begins.

The deal marks the first time the IOC has sold banking rights separately from payment processing. Visa, a TOP sponsor since 1986, has historically controlled both categories under a single contract. The separation allows JPMorgan to activate wealth management, commercial banking, and treasury services without touching point-of-sale infrastructure. Visa's current deal runs through Paris 2024; renewal terms for 2028 and beyond have not been disclosed. The IOC declined to comment on whether Visa negotiated to retain exclusive payment rights or if the category will now operate under split exclusivity.

JPMorgan's entry comes as the IOC reshapes its sponsorship model under revenue pressures. The TOP program generated $3.2B during the 2013-2016 quadrennium; the 2021-2024 cycle is tracking closer to $3.0B, according to IOC financial disclosures. Los Angeles 2028 is projecting $2.5B in domestic sponsorship revenue, a figure that requires at least three additional founding-partner deals at the $300M+ level. JPMorgan's dual role—global TOP and LA28 founding partner—suggests the IOC is willing to bundle international and domestic rights to close gaps left by Alibaba's 2019 withdrawal and Toyota's 2024 downgrade to regional activation.

The structure matters for other financial institutions sizing Olympic entry. Goldman Sachs explored a similar banking deal in 2022 but passed when Visa insisted on bundled payment exclusivity, according to two people familiar with the negotiations. Morgan Stanley's wealth-management division reviewed the category in 2023 and declined to bid. JPMorgan's willingness to pay $1B+ for banking alone—without card rails—suggests the firm values Olympic hospitality inventory, particularly the 10,000+ C-suite invitations the IOC distributes across Summer and Winter cycles. The bank's private-wealth unit manages $3.5T in client assets; Olympic venue access in Los Angeles, Milan-Cortina 2026, and Brisbane 2032 offers natural client entertainment hooks.

Sponsorship architects are now watching whether other TOP categories fracture. Coca-Cola and AB InBev split beverage rights in 2011 (non-alcoholic vs. alcoholic). Intel's 2017 deal carved technology platforms out of Panasonic's electronics monopoly. JPMorgan's banking separation opens the door for fintech sponsors—Stripe, Klarna, Adyen—to negotiate processing deals without competing against a bank's balance sheet. The IOC's sponsorship committee meets in June to discuss category redefinitions for the 2026-2030 cycle; payment processing is on the agenda.

LA28 gains immediate benefit. JPMorgan will anchor the organizing committee's treasury operations, manage venue banking infrastructure, and provide credit facilities for venue construction. The $6.9B LA28 operating budget assumes $1.2B in interest income from advance ticket sales and sponsorship deposits; JPMorgan's banking terms directly affect that line item. The deal also includes branding at SoFi Stadium, the Intuit Dome, and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, though specific venue assets were not disclosed.

Visa's silence is the tell. The company has not issued a statement on JPMorgan's TOP entry, nor has it confirmed its own renewal. The last time Visa extended its Olympic deal—2018, covering 2021-2024—the announcement came 18 months before the contract's expiration. Paris 2024 opens in 14 months. If Visa is renegotiating exclusivity terms, expect clarity before the IOC's Lausanne session in November. If the company is exiting, expect JPMorgan to announce expanded digital-payment rights within six months of Paris closing.

The IOC's next sponsorship window opens in Q3 2025 for the 2030-2034 cycle. Automotive, airline, and telecommunications categories are in play. The JPMorgan deal establishes a new floor: $250M per quadrennium for global TOP rights, $50M+ for founding-partner domestic add-ons. Brands that waited for the IOC to drop prices just watched the floor rise.

The takeaway
JPMorgan's **$1B+** Olympic deal splits banking from payments for the first time, signaling Visa's exclusivity is negotiable and TOP pricing is rising, not falling.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
