Allianz's LA28 deal breaks the IOC's category-exclusivity model, creating a two-tier structure that other hosts will replicate.

Allianz has signed as an official sponsor of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in a deal that marks the first time the International Olympic Committee has allowed a regional sponsor outside its global TOP programme to use Olympic branding. The €100M+ arrangement, negotiated directly between LA28 and the Munich-based insurer, signals a structural break from the category-exclusivity framework that has governed Olympic sponsorship since the 1980s.
The deal permits Allianz to activate against LA28 marks and Olympic IP within North America, while Allianz remains outside the IOC's Worldwide Olympic Partner tier. That tier currently includes no insurance partner—Panasonic, Toyota, Visa, and ten others hold those slots at fees starting near $200M per quadrennium. LA28, operating under the unique revenue-sharing model negotiated with the IOC in 2017, is permitted to sign local deals that do not conflict with TOP categories. What is new: Allianz is not local.
The precedent matters because it creates a two-tier sponsorship structure that other organizing committees will now reference. Paris 2024 raised €1.4B domestically, but those sponsors could not use the rings or "Olympic" in global campaigns. Allianz can. That distinction is worth roughly 30% more in media value according to two sponsorship valuation firms, because it permits global English-language activation and eliminates the asterisks in press releases. Brisbane 2032 and the 2030 Winter host are already studying the LA28 contract language.
For Allianz, the deal solves a specific problem. The company holds naming rights to stadiums in Sydney, São Paulo, and Munich, but has struggled to activate sports properties at scale in North America, where it lacks the brand recognition it enjoys in Europe and Latin America. LA28 gives it a four-year runway into the $18B U.S. property-and-casualty market, anchored by an event that will run in the company's fiscal Q3 2028. Allianz executives have told retail brokers the Olympics window will coincide with a personal-lines push in California, Texas, and Florida.
The deal also clarifies LA28's revenue model. The organizing committee has no public funding and is contractually required to deliver a profit to the IOC. It has signed $2.5B in domestic sponsorship to date, but that figure includes in-kind contributions and long-dated commitments from Delta, Comcast, and Salesforce that will not convert to cash until after 2026. Allianz is cash, and the deal is structured as annual payments beginning in 2025, which helps LA28 cover venue pre-construction and security planning that must be locked by mid-2026.
What to watch: whether the IOC permits similar carve-outs for Brisbane 2032 or attempts to reclaim control by expanding the TOP programme's insurance category. The IOC's next revenue briefing is set for the Lausanne session in March 2025. Also: Allianz's U.S. agency of record, Droga5, is expected to begin creative work by Q2 2025, with first flights planned around the Olympic trials in mid-2028. Two other European insurers have quietly asked their U.S. consultants to model similar deals.
LA28 now has 18 months to sign its final three domestic sponsor categories—quick-service restaurant, consumer electronics, and automotive—before the IOC's marketing blackout period begins in January 2027. The Allianz deal gives it a comp for negotiations, and a proof point that global brands will pay premiums for Olympic access even outside the TOP tier.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
