Las Vegas is closer to securing an MLS franchise than at any point in the league's 30-year history. The bid group includes Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, co-owners of Aston Villa and operators of the Premier League club since 2018, according to people familiar with the expansion process. League sources place the entry fee between $500 million and $600 million, consistent with the San Diego FC valuation announced last year.
This marks the fourth serious Las Vegas expansion attempt since 2016. Previous efforts collapsed over stadium financing and territorial rights disputes with the LA Galaxy, which held veto power within a 75-mile radius until 2019. The current bid cleared that hurdle when MLS restructured its geographical exclusivity rules ahead of the St. Louis City SC launch. The Sawiris-Edens group has been in talks with Clark County officials since October regarding a downtown stadium site near the Fremont Street corridor, per county planning documents reviewed by the Sports Edge desk.
The sponsorship math supports the move. Las Vegas drew 42.2 million visitors in 2023, up 8.4 percent year-over-year. Allegiant Stadium financials show the Raiders generated $572 million in local economic impact during their first full season, and T-Mobile Arena's Golden Knights produced $1.1 billion in direct spending since 2017, according to Applied Analysis. CMOs at casino operators MGM and Caesars have allocated preliminary seven-figure budgets for jersey sponsorship discussions, though neither has formally entered negotiations. One gaming executive described the opportunity as "lower CPM than UFC, higher brand safety than NHL" during a December sponsor summit in Los Angeles.
The league's urgency centers on geometry. MLS currently operates 29 teams with San Diego entering as the 30th in 2025. Commissioner Don Garber has stated publicly the league will cap at 32 teams by 2028 to preserve playoff format integrity and maintain the current 34-game regular season schedule. That leaves two slots. Las Vegas competes directly with Sacramento, which a Casino.org-commissioned study identified as the statistically favored expansion city based on median household income, youth soccer participation rates, and corporate headquarters density. Sacramento's bid group, led by billionaire investor Ron Burkle, has secured a stadium site and submitted architectural renderings. Phoenix and Detroit remain in secondary conversations, but neither has cleared the stadium milestone.
Sawiris brings relevant credentials beyond Villa. His construction firm Orascom built stadiums in Egypt and Algeria, and he sits on the board of Adidas, MLS's kit supplier through 2030 under a $700 million contract. Edens co-founded Fortress Investment Group and owns the Milwaukee Bucks, giving him two decades of league negotiations experience and existing relationships with every team governor. The Las Vegas bid's public face remains Brett Lashbrook, who operated USL Championship side Las Vegas Lights FC from 2018 to 2023 before selling to focus on the MLS effort. Lashbrook attended the MLS Cup final in Columbus on December 9, seated three rows behind Garber.
Stadium terms remain the deciding variable. The bid requires a 22,000-seat soccer-specific venue to meet league minimums, estimated at $450 million in construction costs. Clark County has allocated $200 million in tourism tax credits, contingent on private financing covering the remainder. Sawiris and Edens have committed verbally to the gap but have not filed formal construction bonds. League sources expect a decision by March, ahead of the April Board of Governors meeting in New York.
Two follow-on effects matter for existing operators. A Las Vegas franchise shifts the Western Conference travel map, reducing flight costs for LAFC, LA Galaxy, and San Jose by an estimated 12 percent annually based on current Delta corporate rates. It also accelerates Apple TV's MLS Season Pass subscriber acquisition in Nevada, where the service currently ranks 41st among U.S. states in penetration despite the market's size. Apple executives have told league officials that a Las Vegas team would justify localized Spanish-language broadcasts, which currently exist only for markets with teams.
The county planning commission meets February 14 to review stadium environmental assessments. Sawiris is scheduled to attend.
The takeaway
Las Vegas MLS talks reach stadium-financing stage with Aston Villa owners bidding for one of two remaining expansion slots before league's 32-team cap.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
