FIFA suspended Leandro Paredes for 10 matches following an altercation with two Spanish players immediately after the World Cup Final whistle. The suspension, announced Thursday, applies to all national-team fixtures and creates a shadow complication for FC Barcelona, where Paredes is on loan from Roma through June.
The incident occurred in the tunnel area at Lusail Stadium. Paredes confronted Spanish midfielder Rodri and defender Aymeric Laporte after Argentina's victory, with video showing extended pushing before security separated them. FIFA's disciplinary committee cited "assault on an opponent" and "unsporting conduct following the final whistle." Rodri received a 3-match ban. Laporte was cleared.
For Argentina, the math is straightforward. Paredes misses the next 10 competitive internationals, covering March and September qualifying windows plus potential friendlies if AFA requests FIFA approval to apply the ban there. For Barcelona, the texture is different. The club does not control whether the suspension bleeds into pre-season friendlies or promotional tours, which often carry FIFA sanction for insurance purposes. Barcelona's U.S. summer tour against Inter Miami and Real Madrid last year required FIFA match clearance. If the club books similar fixtures this summer and Paredes remains on the roster, his availability depends on whether AFA has exhausted his ban by then.
Paredes is averaging 68 minutes per Liga appearance this season, primarily spelling Frenkie de Jong in possession phases. His loan includes a €15 million option to buy, which Barcelona has until June 15 to trigger. The club's technical staff has been lukewarm. Sporting director Deco was in Rome two weeks ago for the Friedkin Group's annual European football summit, sitting three tables from Roma director Tiago Pinto. No Barcelona official has publicly committed to the purchase.
The suspension introduces a specific valuation question. Paredes turns 30 in June. A player unavailable for national duty through September loses showcase value for a World Cup cycle that now includes the 2026 tournament on home soil in North America. His agent, Juan Figer, represents 11 South American internationals and has been calling Premier League clubs since December about summer moves. Figer was in London last week for the Tottenham-Arsenal match, sitting in the directors' box at Emirates.
Barcelona's midfield budget for next season is approximately €40 million net after expected departures. The club is monitoring Martín Zubimendi at Real Sociedad, who carries a €60 million release clause, and has held two meetings with the agent for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's teammate Stanislav Lobotka, who would cost closer to €25 million. If Barcelona declines the Paredes option, Roma will field offers. Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe both inquired in January.
The ban also adjusts Argentina's midfield rotation heading into Copa América preparation. Paredes has started 80% of qualifiers since the World Cup win. Enzo Fernández and Alexis Mac Allister now absorb those minutes, with Giovani Lo Celso the likely third option. Coach Lionel Scaloni has called 27 players for the March window. He has not spoken publicly about the suspension.
Barcelona's next board meeting is March 12. The Paredes purchase option will be on the agenda, along with kit renewal discussions with Nike and the club's summer tour routing. If the club passes, Roma has until July 1 to register him for European competition or move him before the window closes August 30.
The takeaway
Paredes' 10-game FIFA ban clouds his €15M Barcelona option and shifts Argentina's midfield depth through September qualifiers.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
