LIV Golf files Chapter 11 with $15M cash after burning $5.5B Saudi capital

PIF withdrawal leaves Rahm, DeChambeau, and 51 contracted players in limbo as league liquidates three-year experiment.

LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Tuesday morning with $15 million in remaining liquidity, three years after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund committed what became $5.5 billion in losses to the breakaway league. The filing lists $127 million in current liabilities and names 53 player contracts as contingent claims pending restructuring.

PIF notified LIV's board January 14 that it would not fund operations past March 31, according to a person with direct knowledge of the decision. The league had been burning roughly $150 million per month on tournament purses, team operating costs, and guaranteed player salaries that averaged $127 million annually for its 48-man roster. Jon Rahm signed a $550 million deal in December 2023; Bryson DeChambeau's 2022 contract guaranteed $125 million over four years. Both are now unsecured creditors in a Delaware filing that lists Adelaide as the sole bidder for league assets at $42 million, contingent on player contract releases.

The collapse matters because it ends the most aggressive capital deployment in sports-league history and creates immediate labor market chaos in professional golf. LIV guaranteed contracts had no performance clawbacks and prohibited players from returning to the PGA Tour without league consent—clauses the bankruptcy trustee will void under standard rejection procedures. That opens March 1 as the functional free-agency date for 14 players ranked inside the OWGR top 50, including Rahm, DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Brooks Koepka. The PGA Tour reinstated lifetime membership for any LIV player who returns within 90 days of the bankruptcy filing and pays a $2 million fine, according to a memo commissioner Jay Monahan sent to tour members Monday night. That fee structure suggests the tour expects 10-15 high-value returns, or $20M-$30M in penalty revenue that flows directly to the Player Impact Program pool.

PIF's decision to cut funding follows Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's December 2024 directive to reduce sovereign fund exposure in Western sports properties that had not delivered measurable brand impact. LIV's three-year media rights deals with The CW generated an average 412,000 U.S. viewers per event in 2024, down from 578,000 in 2023, and the league never secured a title sponsor despite pitches to 47 brands in the oil, finance, and luxury sectors. The $5.5 billion loss exceeded PIF's combined investments in Newcastle United, the Saudi Pro League, and Formula E by $1.8 billion, with no comparable asset value to show. One PIF advisor noted the fund could have bought a 15% stake in the Premier League's broadcast rights for the same capital outlay.

The bankruptcy trustee is Delaware attorney Laura Davis Jones, who oversaw the Toys "R" Us liquidation. She has 60 days to either find a buyer for LIV as a going concern or conduct an orderly wind-down. The Adelaide bid is nonbinding and covers only media rights, the team franchise structure, and intellectual property; it explicitly excludes player contracts. That means the $2.1 billion in remaining guaranteed salary obligations will be discharged, and players become free agents the moment the court approves the reorganization plan. Three team franchises—4Aces GC, RangeGoats GC, and Smash GC—are structured as Delaware LLCs with equity held by their captains (DeChambeau, Bubba Watson, Koepka). Those entities have filed separate motions to exit the LIV umbrella and continue as independent exhibition teams, which would let them keep sponsor relationships with Greyson Clothiers, Malbon Golf, and Athletic Brewing.

The PGA Tour's player-relations team has scheduled 22 individual calls this week with LIV members, prioritizing those whose OWGR points have decayed below the threshold for automatic Masters qualification. Rahm's ranking dropped to 38th after he skipped the Genesis Invitational; he needs a top-4 finish in a designated event by March 23 to lock a major championship calendar. His agent, Tim Mickelson, was in Ponte Vedra Beach on Tuesday. DeChambeau's YouTube channel, which gained 3.2 million subscribers during his LIV tenure, is in renewal talks with three equipment sponsors who paused deals pending his tour status. One sponsor term sheet reviewed by this desk offers $8 million annually if he returns to the PGA Tour, $3 million if he remains independent.

Watch whether Monahan waives the $2 million reinstatement fee for players who agree to three-year equipment and apparel deals with tour partners Titleist, TaylorMade, or FootJoy—a mechanism that turns penalty revenue into supplier marketing budgets. Adelaide's nonbinding bid expires February 28, and the company has hired LionTree Advisors to raise $150 million in private credit to fund a revised offer that includes five team franchises. The bankruptcy court schedules its first creditor meeting February 18.

PIF deployed $32 billion into Western sports between 2021 and 2024. LIV represents 17% of that total and 94% of the losses.

The takeaway
LIV's **$5.5B** write-off ends Saudi sports experiment; 14 top-50 players enter free agency March 1 as PGA Tour collects reinstatement fees.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
