Angels Fire Perry Minasian, Install John Mozeliak as Interim GM

The move ends Minasian's four-year tenure and imports St. Louis's architect as Arte Moreno shops the team.

The Los Angeles Angels dismissed General Manager Perry Minasian on Monday and named John Mozeliak interim GM, ending a four-year run that delivered one playoff appearance and consistent underperformance relative to payroll. Mozeliak, who built three World Series rosters in St. Louis across 17 seasons, stepped down from the Cardinals in October and had been serving as a senior advisor. His hire suggests owner Arte Moreno wants credibility during sale conversations, not another rebuild.

Minasian arrived in November 2020 with a mandate to fix a farm system and complement Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. He traded for Tyler Anderson and Noah Syndergaard, signed $106 million Aaron Loup and Raisel Iglesias, and watched Ohtani leave for Los Angeles anyway. The Angels posted a .479 winning percentage under his watch, finishing fourth in the AL West in three of four seasons. The 2023 collapse—ten games above .500 in June, then missing the playoffs by six games—sealed his exit. The front office had already begun distancing itself by September, when Minasian stopped appearing at owner meetings.

Mozeliak's presence matters less for what he'll do in the next six months and more for what he signals to prospective buyers. Moreno has quietly circulated the team since December, and early bidders want assurance the baseball operations infrastructure won't implode during due diligence. Mozeliak provides that. He turned the Cardinals into the National League's most efficient operation, drafting 42 players who reached the majors between 2008 and 2020, including Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and a succession of homegrown rotation arms. His interim title suggests he's not staying past the sale, but his Rolodex will matter when the new owner rebuilds the front office. Expect him to audit the scouting and analytics departments, then hand the buyer a prioritized shopping list.

The broader question is whether Mozeliak hires his replacement or whether the new ownership group does. Moreno is fielding bids in the $2.5 billion to $2.8 billion range, according to two people familiar with the process, and expects to finalize terms by late spring. That timeline means Mozeliak will oversee the amateur draft in July and likely the trade deadline. He'll also inherit $83 million in committed payroll for 2025, most of it locked into Trout's $37.1 million and Anthony Rendon's $38.6 million. Neither contract moves without significant cash retention, which limits Mozeliak's flexibility but also clarifies his mandate: stabilize, don't rebuild.

The Angels haven't announced a search timeline for a permanent GM, and won't until ownership clarity arrives. Mozeliak's deputy in St. Louis, Michael Girsch, is now the Cardinals' president of baseball operations and isn't available. Randy Flores, St. Louis's scouting director under Mozeliak, joined the Padres last year. That leaves external candidates like Dana Brown (Astros assistant GM), Matt Arnold (Brewers GM), and Jeremy Zoll (Dodgers VP) as names to watch if Mozeliak recommends his own exit plan. The Angels also owe Minasian the remainder of his contract, which runs through 2025 and pays roughly $1.8 million annually.

Watch for Mozeliak's first roster move in the next two weeks, likely a bullpen signing or minor-league depth add that signals whether he's managing for competitiveness or asset preservation. Expect the sale process to accelerate in March, when MLB's ownership committee reconvenes. And listen for whether Mozeliak attends spring training in Tempe—his presence there would indicate he's staying through the summer, his absence that the new owner is already picking the next GM. The Angels open Cactus League play February 21.

The takeaway
Mozeliak's interim role stabilizes the front office during Moreno's **$2.5 billion**-plus sale process, not a long-term rebuild.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
