Dodgers Add Alex Anthopoulos as VP, Creating Dual-GM Structure Under Zaidi

Toronto's former architect joins Los Angeles in newly created role, signaling front-office expansion ahead of CBA uncertainty.

The Los Angeles Dodgers hired Alex Anthopoulos as vice president of baseball operations, slotting the former Toronto general manager into a newly created position alongside GM Farhan Zaidi. The move adds $2-3 million in annual front-office payroll and marks the Dodgers' first senior baseball-operations hire since Andrew Friedman arrived as president in 2014.

Anthopoulos spent six seasons running Toronto's baseball operations, drafting 43 players who reached the majors and trading for José Bautista in what became one of the decade's cleanest arbitrage plays. He left the Blue Jays in 2015 after ownership declined to extend his contract past the organization's first playoff appearance in 22 years. The Dodgers reached him through Zaidi, who worked with Anthopoulos during overlapping stops in the front-office apprentice circuit a decade ago. Both are Canadian. Both built reputations as analytically fluent negotiators willing to exploit market inefficiencies other GMs ignore.

The hire matters for three reasons. First, it creates optionality if Zaidi departs. San Francisco interviewed him for their GM vacancy last winter, and the Giants are expected to circle back when Brian Sabean retires. The Dodgers now hold a credible internal successor without running an external search that tips their hand to agents and rival clubs. Second, it expands trade bandwidth ahead of the 2016 deadline. Los Angeles operates 14 active prospect-development pipelines across rookie ball, and Anthopoulos gives them a second senior voice on calls with clubs shopping controllable arms. The Dodgers haven't acquired a front-line starter at the deadline since 2012; this changes the calculus. Third, it positions the front office for the 2016-2021 collective bargaining negotiation. Anthopoulos sat on MLB's competition committee during the last CBA cycle and maintains relationships with eight current GMs who were assistants under his tenure. That network becomes leverage when luxury-tax thresholds and international spending pools are on the table.

The structure is unusual but not unprecedented. The Yankees ran a similar dual-executive model under Brian Cashman and Gene Michael in the late 1990s, with Michael handling amateur scouting while Cashman negotiated trades. The difference: Michael was 67 and winding down. Anthopoulos is 38 and spent the last four months consulting for a Silicon Valley sports-data startup that models injury risk using biomechanics. He brings vendor relationships the Dodgers don't currently access, including a shoulder-pathology algorithm the Blue Jays used to avoid $18 million in dead money during his final two seasons.

Watch three follow-on moves. First, whether the Dodgers promote from within to backfill Anthopoulos's responsibilities or hire another external voice, likely by early December before the Winter Meetings. Second, how Toronto responds. The Blue Jays lost four front-office staffers to rival clubs since Anthopoulos departed, and this hire accelerates the drain. Third, whether Zaidi's contract gets extended past 2018. If ownership locks him in for five more years, Anthopoulos becomes the long-term build architect. If they don't, he's the insurance policy already in the building.

The Dodgers open Spring Training in 91 days with $248 million committed to the 2016 roster, fourth-highest in baseball. Anthopoulos inherits a win-now window with the deepest farm system in the National League. His first call will be deciding which of 17 A-ball arms to protect on the 40-man roster before the Rule 5 draft on December 10.

The takeaway
Dodgers add Toronto's former GM as VP, creating succession depth and trade bandwidth ahead of the July deadline and CBA talks.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
