Lakers Sale to Buss Group at $7.8B Resets NBA Floor, Pushes 2026 Sports M&A Past $42B

Transaction at 11.2x revenue marks highest NBA multiple since expansion talks began; family offices now pricing NFL stakes above $8B.

Jeannie Buss's controlling group closed a $7.8 billion acquisition of the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday, filing terms that value the franchise at 11.2x trailing twelve-month revenue and immediately reset pricing expectations across North American professional sports. The deal, structured as a management-led buyout with backing from three unnamed family offices and Sixth Street Partners, pushes cumulative 2026 sports M&A volume to $42.3 billion through mid-February, already surpassing the previous annual record set in 2023.

The Lakers generated $696 million in revenue during the 2024-25 season, per league revenue-sharing disclosures. At 11.2x, the sale multiple exceeds the 9.8x Phoenix Suns transaction in 2023 and the 10.1x Washington Commanders deal that same year. The Buss group's financing includes $2.1 billion in senior debt from JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, with Sixth Street taking a 12% minority stake for $936 million. The three family offices, identified in SEC filings only as Delaware entities, hold a combined 23% for roughly $1.8 billion. Jeannie Buss retains operational control with 65% equity and board majority.

The Lakers' valuation floor matters beyond Los Angeles. Four family offices currently sizing NFL franchise stakes are now underwriting $8 billion minimum entry prices for large-market teams, per two allocators who spoke on background. One said his group modeled the Commanders at $6.05 billion in 2023; the same worksheet now prices a similar asset at $8.4 billion, citing the Lakers' 11.2x as the new comp. Another allocator said his fund passed on a 9% Lakers minority stake at $650 million in late 2024, believing the 9.3x implied valuation was rich. That same 9% piece, marked to the $7.8 billion sale price, is now worth $702 million. The fund is not buying back in.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told CNBC on Friday that the Lakers sale "demonstrates the health of the league's business model" and noted that three ownership groups have approached the league office since Thursday about expansion bids in Seattle and Las Vegas. Silver did not name the groups. Expansion franchise fees are expected to start at $4 billion per team, per a league source, though Seattle groups are privately modeling $4.5 billion to account for market size and the KeyArena renovation debt already on the books. The Lakers' 11.2x multiple implies an expansion team would need to generate $360 million in Year 1 revenue to justify $4 billion, a figure two team finance executives called "optimistic but not absurd" given current media deals.

The Buss group's Sixth Street partnership carries forward-looking implications. Sixth Street also holds stakes in the San Antonio Spurs (25%, acquired 2021), FC Barcelona (10%, 2023), and Real Madrid basketball (8%, 2024). The firm's sports portfolio now totals $6.2 billion in gross asset value, making it the largest alternative-asset manager in team sports by committed capital. One rival allocator said his fund is "watching Sixth Street's exit timing closely," noting that private-equity holds in sports franchises typically target 7-10 year horizons. Sixth Street's Spurs stake, now in Year 4, would align with a 2028-2031 exit window, likely into another family office or a public vehicle.

Jeannie Buss will remain Lakers governor and CEO. Her brother Joey Buss, previously holding 15% equity, sold his stake into the transaction and is no longer involved in team operations. Two former Laker front-office executives said Joey's exit resolves a long-standing governance tension and gives Jeannie cleaner authority to pursue coaching and roster changes without family veto.

The next datapoint arrives in approximately six weeks, when the NBA's Phoenix Suns' new ownership group, led by Mat Ishbia, files its first full-year revenue disclosure. Ishbia paid $4 billion for the Suns in 2023 at 9.8x revenue; league sources expect his Year 1 revenue to exceed $425 million, driven by a new Footprint Center naming-rights deal and expanded club-seat inventory. If the Suns hit $425 million, the Lakers' 11.2x multiple would imply a Suns valuation of $4.76 billion today, a 19% gain in under three years. Family offices are noticing.

The takeaway
Lakers at **11.2x** revenue resets NBA franchise pricing; family offices now model NFL stakes above **$8B**, with Sixth Street holding **$6.2B** sports portfolio.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
