LPGA Takes Golf Saudi Money, Announces $4M Las Vegas Event Under New Commissioner

Ebony Marino's first major deal pairs LIV Golf's backer with women's tour as purse arms race accelerates.

The LPGA Tour announced a multi-year partnership with Golf Saudi and unveiled a new Las Vegas event carrying a $4 million purse, the first significant commercial moves under Commissioner Ebony Marino, who took office January 1st. The deal brings the Public Investment Fund's golf arm—architect of LIV Golf's men's disruption—into the women's game with direct title sponsorship and event underwriting.

The Las Vegas tournament debuts in 2026, date and venue unannounced. Golf Saudi will also sponsor the Aramco Team Series, the hybrid pro-am format the Saudi entity already operates on the Ladies European Tour. Marino called the partnership "transformational" in prepared remarks. No total contract value was disclosed. The LPGA declined to comment on guarantee structures or whether Golf Saudi secures board observer rights, a provision common in Middle East sports deals above $50 million.

This matters because Marino inherits a tour where the top 20 money events average $3.1 million purses, roughly half the PGA Tour's non-elevated stops, and sponsors increasingly demand global inventory. Golf Saudi solves both problems. The $4 million Vegas purse ranks fourth on the LPGA calendar behind only the U.S. Women's Open ($12 million), CME Group Tour Championship ($7 million), and Chevron Championship ($7.9 million). It also gives the tour a foothold in Nevada, where Wynn Resorts and Caesars have been circling women's golf sponsorships since the WNBA's Aces proved the market. Marino spent a decade at the PGA Tour, most recently as chief commercial officer, and watched LIV peel off Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson with nine-figure checks while the establishment dithered. Her move here is faster.

The optics are predictable. Golf Saudi is chaired by Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who also chairs Newcastle United and sits on the PGA Tour Enterprises board after last year's framework agreement. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International issued statements within hours. Senator Ron Wyden's office, which has filed three bills targeting Saudi sports investment, did not immediately respond. The difference is arithmetic. The PGA Tour took $1.5 billion in PIF equity after two years of litigation and player defections. The LPGA is taking what amounts to $12-16 million annually—assuming a three-year deal with underwriting and activation—and getting it before anyone leaves. That is the leverage of moving early.

Meanwhile, the Aramco Team Series sponsorship formalizes a relationship Golf Saudi has cultivated since 2021, when it launched the LET events in London, Jeddah, and Spain. Nelly Korda and Jin Young Ko have played Aramco stops. No major American sponsor objected. The LPGA's corporate roster includes Cognizant, Aon, and Rolex—none of whom have issued statements. The silence is the signal. Title sponsors care about visibility and hospitality inventory. If Golf Saudi writes checks and delivers a clean broadcast, the tour's Fortune 500 base will tolerate the provenance.

The timing also lands during the LPGA's strongest growth cycle in 20 years. Total purses for 2025 will exceed $131 million across 35 events, up from $93 million in 2021. Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are driving women's sports viewership to record highs; the LPGA's Q1 2025 Nielsen numbers are up 14% year-over-year in the 18-49 demo. Marino is capitalizing on momentum her predecessor, Mollie Marcoux Samaan, built but did not fully monetize. The question is whether Golf Saudi is paying market rate or buying soft power. The tour will not say. The PIF's golf budget is effectively infinite. The LPGA's job is to extract maximum value before the leverage window closes.

Marino's next test is the 2026 schedule announcement, expected in June. The Vegas event likely lands in October, after the Solheim Cup and before the CME finale. That gives the tour a West Coast anchor and a second desert stop after the Fry's-sponsored event in Phoenix. Sponsor renewal conversations for 2027-2029 begin in August, and every incumbent now knows the LPGA has access to sovereign capital. That changes the negotiation.

The LPGA will also announce coordinator hires under Marino's executive structure within 60 days, including a new chief marketing officer role to manage the Golf Saudi relationship and pursue other Middle East and Asia-Pacific partners. The tour has been in talks with UAE and Qatar entities since late 2024. Those deals, if they close, will reference the Golf Saudi terms as the pricing floor.

The takeaway
Marino locks Saudi capital before rival women's leagues emerge, resetting LPGA purse floor and corporate negotiation leverage.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
