Heat Sign Klay Thompson for $12.8M After Warriors Buyout Clears Roster Math

Miami adds shooting depth while Golden State absorbs dead cap to chase flex below the second apron.

The Miami Heat signed five-time All-Star guard Klay Thompson to a one-year, $12.8 million veteran deal after the Golden State Warriors completed a contract buyout Thursday afternoon. Thompson, 34, clears physicals Monday and joins a Heat rotation that ranked 27th in three-point percentage last season at 34.8%.

Golden State ate $43 million in remaining salary to execute the buyout, spreading the cap hit across two seasons and dropping the Warriors $18 million below the second apron threshold. That margin matters: it restores their ability to aggregate salaries in trades and use the taxpayer mid-level exception next summer. Thompson had two years left on a four-year, $190 million extension signed in 2019. He appeared in 77 games last season, averaging 17.9 points on 38.7% from three, down from his career 41.3% mark but functional within a system built on movement.

Miami's move addresses two problems. First, spacing: the Heat generated 1.04 points per possession in half-court sets last year, 22nd in the league, and shot 31.2% on corner threes, worst among playoff teams. Thompson has made 2,346 career threes, 12th all-time, and his release speed remains elite even as lateral quickness has declined. Second, leverage: Jimmy Butler enters the final year of his deal, and the front office needed a credible second creator to keep Butler's camp from forcing a trade demand before the February deadline. Thompson isn't that creator, but his presence lets Erik Spoelstra stagger Butler's minutes without collapsing offensive efficiency.

The contract structure is clean. One year, no options, no trade kicker. Thompson's agent negotiated a $2.1 million signing bonus paid within 30 days, protecting against any midseason roster moves. Miami hard-capped itself at the first apron by using part of the non-taxpayer mid-level, leaving $4.7 million in room before triggering trade restrictions. That cushion disappears if Tyler Herro's extension talks, currently stalled at four years, $120 million, reset above $32 million annually.

Golden State's calculus runs deeper than salary relief. The Warriors are positioning for a 2025 summer when Stephen Curry turns 37 and his $55.7 million player option decision looms. Clearing Thompson now lets them evaluate Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody in expanded roles without the pressure of playoff rotation politics. It also signals to the rest of the roster that the franchise will prioritize financial flexibility over sentiment, a message aimed as much at Draymond Green's camp as at Curry's.

Thompson's market was narrow. The Lakers offered the veteran minimum. Dallas pitched a two-year deal starting at $8.4 million but couldn't guarantee playing time ahead of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic. Miami offered the most money and the clearest role: 28-32 minutes per game, starting at the two-guard spot, zero defensive assignments against primary ball-handlers. Thompson's four prior ACL and Achilles injuries limit his ability to chase smaller guards, but Miami's switching scheme hides that by funneling drivers into Bam Adebayo.

The Heat's front office, led by Pat Riley and Andy Elisburg, bet that Thompson's shooting variance stabilizes in a lower-usage role. Last season he attempted 17.0 field goals per game in Golden State, forcing contested looks late in possessions. Miami projects 11-13 attempts per game, mostly catch-and-shoot opportunities generated by Butler and Adebayo pick-and-rolls. If Thompson hits 40% from three on that volume, Miami's half-court offense jumps into the top 12. If he drifts below 36%, the deal becomes a sunk cost with no long-term damage.

Watch for Thompson's endorsement portfolio to shift. His $8 million annually deal with Anta, the Chinese sneaker brand, expires in March 2025, and Miami's Latin American and European sponsor base opens new angles. The Heat's partnership with Goya and Sabadell runs through 2027, and both have Caribbean distribution networks where Thompson's Warriors legacy still carries weight. His agent already fielded inquiries from a tequila brand and a Miami-based yacht charter service.

Miami opens training camp September 26. Spoelstra runs his first full-squad practice September 28, the same day the Heat host a sponsor summit at FTX Arena that will preview the 2024-2025 jersey patch deal, currently unsigned after the Ultimate Software contract lapsed. Thompson's presence gives the sales team a marquee name for decks pitched to financial services and luxury auto brands courting the South Florida market. Golden State, meanwhile, lists Thompson's locker contents on an internal auction site next week, with proceeds directed to the Warriors Community Foundation.

The takeaway
Miami adds shooting for **$12.8M** while Golden State clears **$43M** to reset apron math and pivot toward Curry's **2025** decision.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
