Minnesota Women's Hockey Adds Hobey Baker Winner Natalie Darwitz to Staff

The three-time NCAA champion joins a program rebuilding after missing the Frozen Four for the first time since 2014.

The University of Minnesota announced Natalie Darwitz, the 2005 Patty Kazmaier Award winner and three-time NCAA champion, has joined the women's hockey coaching staff. The hire comes six months after the Golden Gophers finished fifth in the WCHA standings and exited the NCAA tournament in the quarterfinals.

Darwitz won national titles with Minnesota in 2004, 2005, and 2006, captaining the final two championship teams. She scored 114 goals in 139 career games and remains the program's all-time leader in points per game. After college she played 11 years professionally, including two Olympic silver medals and a world championship. Her last coaching role was a three-season stint as an assistant at Hamline University, a Division III program 15 minutes from Minnesota's campus.

The move matters because Minnesota's pipeline advantage is shrinking. The Gophers have won seven national championships but none since 2016. Wisconsin has closed the gap in WCHA recruiting, pulling four of Minnesota's top in-state prospects in the past two cycles. Ohio State landed Eden Prairie native Abbey Murphy, who scored 28 goals as a sophomore last season. Minnesota's 2024 recruiting class ranked fourth in the conference per team composite rankings, behind Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Minnesota Duluth.

Darwitz gives Minnesota credibility with families who remember when the program was automatic. She played under Laura Halldorson, whose 278 wins built the dynasty but whose retirement in 2007 marked the beginning of competitive parity. Current head coach Brad Frost won three titles in his first eight seasons but has now missed the Frozen Four twice in four years. Darwitz's hire suggests Minnesota is leaning into nostalgia as a counter to facility arms races elsewhere. Wisconsin opened a $16 million dedicated women's hockey facility in 2021. Ohio State renovated its Olympic-sheet rink with $8 million in donor funds last year. Minnesota plays in Ridder Arena, opened in 2002 and untouched since.

The timing also reflects NHL influence creeping into women's college hockey. Minnesota Wild assistant GM Tom Kurvers, who died in 2021, championed hiring former players into development roles. Darwitz worked Wild youth camps for six years and sits on the board of the Minnesota Wild Foundation, which donated $500,000 to girls hockey initiatives last year. Her networks overlap with the families writing checks and the high school coaches steering talent.

Watch whether Darwitz's arrival unlocks the 2025 class. Minnesota has commitments from three top-50 recruits, per Future Considerations rankings, but is competing with Wisconsin for Edina forward Sami Bowlby and Andover defenseman Ava Lindsay. Both players' club teams practice at TRIA Rink in St. Paul, where Darwitz runs summer clinics. Expect Minnesota to announce coordinator titles within two weeks, either elevating Darwitz or clarifying her role in player development versus on-ice systems.

The hire also signals Frost's contract extension is coming. He signed a five-year deal in 2019 worth roughly $300,000 annually, below Wisconsin's Mark Johnson at $350,000. Athletic department sources told local media last month that Frost's extension was "in process" but stalled over assistant salary pool. Darwitz's compensation was not disclosed, but Division I women's hockey assistants typically earn $60,000 to $90,000. If Minnesota is spending there, it suggests the department is backing Frost through the next cycle rather than evaluating him on a one-year leash.

The Gophers open the 2024-25 season October 4 against Bemidji State. Darwitz will be on the bench.

The takeaway
Minnesota bets nostalgia and NHL-adjacent credibility can stop in-state recruiting erosion as Wisconsin and Ohio State outspend on facilities.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
