Jokić, Giannis, Curry 2027 free agency window forces $76B media rights renegotiation

Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Stephen Curry all hold player options expiring in summer 2027, the same year the NBA can trigger its mid-term opt-out on the current $76 billion media rights deal with Disney, NBCUniversal, and Amazon. The convergence is not accidental.

The three players—combined nine MVP awards, six titles—represent the league's most valuable global assets outside LeBron James. Jokić moves Serbian television numbers. Giannis is the only active player who can anchor a EuroLeague crossover conversation. Curry remains the single biggest driver of national television ratings when Golden State plays in primetime. All three can walk in July 2027. All three have representation that has been briefing league executives on max-contract structures under a renegotiated cap scenario since last summer.

The timing matters because the NBA's current media agreements include a clause allowing either side to reopen terms after the 2026-27 season if certain performance thresholds are not met. Viewership through the first year of the Amazon package is tracking 11 percent below internal projections, per two people familiar with the data. The league wants to reset the local rights collapse into the national deal. Disney wants to renegotiate its RSN exposure. NBCUniversal is fine. Amazon wants more playoff inventory. Everyone wants clarity before Jokić decides whether Denver is worth $62 million in 2027-28 or whether he would prefer to play in Miami for $54 million and live on a boat.

Front offices are already modeling. If the cap rises to $178 million under a renegotiated deal—the number floating in governor calls—max contracts for players with Jokić's tenure jump to $67 million in year one. If the deal stays flat or declines, the cap stays near $165 million, and max offers drop to $59 million. The difference is $8 million per year, or $40 million over five years, or the entire operating budget of a EuroLeague club. Jokić is Serbian. He has said publicly he may retire early. He has also said publicly he enjoys money.

Giannis is in Milwaukee, a market with a local rights deal worth $22 million per year, less than half the league average. The Bucks are owned by hedge fund principals who have been clear in private league meetings that they will not extend Giannis without cap certainty. They have also been clear they will trade him in February 2027 if he does not commit by the deadline. That gives the league nine months to either close a renegotiation or watch Giannis get moved to a coastal market that can immediately monetize his image rights in ways Milwaukee cannot.

Curry is 39 in 2027. Golden State's ownership has indicated it will offer the full max regardless of media outcomes, but Curry's extension decision will signal whether the Warriors remain a national television asset or whether the league needs to prepare for a post-Curry Bay Area product that does not move ratings. Amazon's deal includes a clause that adjusts its playoff payment if certain star players retire or move to non-playoff teams during the contract term. Curry is on that list. So is LeBron, but LeBron is 42 in 2027 and the actuarial table writes itself.

The league's next board meeting is scheduled for January 2026 in Las Vegas. The agenda includes a closed session on media renegotiation strategy. The following week, Jokić's agent is meeting with Denver's front office to discuss a two-year extension that would push his free agency to 2029, after the media cycle resolves. Denver has not yet made an offer. The meeting is scheduled for 90 minutes. It will take six.

The takeaway
Three superstar free agents in 2027 give NBA leverage to reopen **$76B** media deal mid-cycle, but only if Jokić, Giannis, and Curry commit before trade deadlines force movement.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
