NBC hired Mike Tomlin as an NFL studio analyst days after his departure from the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he posted a 186-103-2 regular-season record across 16 seasons. The network did not disclose financial terms. Tomlin joins a studio operation that has cycled through former players and coordinators but has not landed a sitting head coach with his winning percentage since Bill Cowher's initial CBS stint.
Tomlin left Pittsburgh following three consecutive playoff exits and a front-office disagreement over personnel authority, per two people familiar with the matter. He interviewed for head-coaching vacancies in Las Vegas and New Orleans but withdrew before second rounds. NBC reached out within 72 hours of his Steelers exit becoming official. The studio role reports to Sam Flood, NBC's executive producer of sports, and places Tomlin on Sunday Night Football pregame panels and Notre Dame Football halftime analysis when scheduling permits.
The hire addresses two pressure points. First, NBC's Sunday Night Football ratings declined 4.2% year-over-year in the 2024 season, the steepest drop among the three legacy broadcast partners. Amazon's Thursday Night Football grew 11% in the same window, narrowing NBC's margin in the under-50 male demo that drives NFL sponsor commitments. Second, NBC is six months from its next negotiation window with the league, which begins informal conversations in August 2025. Putting a recognizable face with recent sideline credibility into studio production signals to league offices that NBC is willing to spend on talent beyond the booth. Tomlin's name recognition in the Pittsburgh and broader AFC North markets also gives NBC a ratings lever for Sunday night games involving the Steelers, Ravens, and Browns, which accounted for nine of NBC's 18 regular-season broadcasts last season.
Tomlin's agent, Jimmy Sexton, has negotiated studio deals for Jon Gruden, Bill Belichick, and Sean Payton in prior cycles. Sexton typically structures these as one-year agreements with team-return clauses, allowing the coach to leave if a front-office role emerges mid-season. NBC has used similar language in past deals with analysts who maintained ambitions for GM or president-of-football-operations roles. Tomlin has been linked to the Washington Commanders' front office by two executives who worked with him in Tampa Bay, though the Commanders hired Adam Peters in January 2024 and have not signaled an imminent restructure.
The deal also changes the calculation for other networks. ESPN's Monday Night Football has used Peyton and Eli Manning on an alternate broadcast but has not secured a former head coach for its main studio show since Rex Ryan's departure in 2023. Fox elevated Greg Olsen to its top booth but remains thin on head-coaching experience in its studio rotation. CBS has Bill Cowher, who has been with the network since 2007 but has not coached since 2006. Tomlin's availability and NBC's speed in closing the deal leave ESPN and Fox without a comparable move unless they pursue Mike Vrabel, who has been quieter about media interest, or wait for the next wave of coaching changes in January 2026.
NBC also benefits from Tomlin's recruiting appeal. His presence gives the network a direct line to current coordinators and position coaches who may consider media roles after playoff eliminations. NBC used Tony Dungy in a similar capacity from 2009 to 2012, when Dungy's phone log became a talent pipeline for Sunday Night Football producers. The network hired three coordinators as analysts during that window. Tomlin's relationships with defensive coordinators across the league, built during his 18 years as a position coach and coordinator before taking the Steelers job, give NBC access to the same pipeline.
Watch whether NBC folds Tomlin into its Notre Dame coverage beyond halftime spots. The network holds exclusive rights to Notre Dame home games through 2029 and has used NFL analysts to cross-promote Sunday night broadcasts during the college season. Tomlin played at William & Mary and has no Notre Dame ties, but NBC has previously placed analysts without college affiliations into its South Bend booth for marquee games. If Tomlin appears in the booth for Notre Dame's September opener against Texas A&M, it signals NBC is treating him as a multi-platform asset rather than a pure NFL studio hire.
The move arrives as CNBC published its 2026 NBA team valuations, with three franchises now clearing $10 billion. That figure has no direct bearing on NFL studio deals, but it reflects the broader media-rights environment in which NBC is operating. Leagues are pricing rights assuming that live sports remain the only content category that reliably delivers same-day audiences at scale. NBC's deal runs through 2033, but the network renegotiates certain clauses, including flex-scheduling windows and playoff assignments, in 2027. Tomlin's hire, and whatever NBC paid for it, is a down payment on that conversation.
Tomlin's first NBC appearance is scheduled for the network's NFL Draft coverage in late April, per a person with knowledge of the production calendar.
The takeaway
NBC secures Tomlin to stabilize studio credibility ahead of 2027 rights talks while Amazon narrows SNF's demo advantage by double digits.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
