Big Ten admits officiating error in Michigan-WMU finish, same crew worked Nebraska-Maryland debacle

Conference statement arrives as expansion math forces harder decisions about crew depth, training budgets, and exposure to litigation.

The Big Ten Conference confirmed an officiating error in Michigan's Hail Mary victory over Western Michigan on Saturday, the second high-profile mistake by the same crew in consecutive weeks. The crew had worked Nebraska-Maryland seven days earlier, a game that ended with confusion over whether Maryland's final field goal attempt should have been permitted.

The Michigan-WMU finish turned on whether Western Michigan's final lateral play should have been ruled dead before Michigan defensive back Aamir Hall scooped the ball and returned it for what officials called a touchdown. The Big Ten statement acknowledged the ball should have been blown dead, though the outcome would not change. Western Michigan had already lost 17-16 when the play concluded. The crew chief was unavailable for comment Monday.

What matters is not the outcome of a non-conference game but the 18-team conference facing a referee shortage it cannot quietly manage. The Big Ten expanded by four schools this season, adding UCLA, USC, Oregon, and Washington. That means 12 additional conference games per season, plus bowl assignments, plus the expanded College Football Playoff structure that begins this December. The math is unforgiving. The league needs more crews, or it needs to work the existing crews harder, or it needs to accept that borderline officiating mistakes will arrive more frequently and with higher stakes.

The conference pays its officiating coordinator approximately $350,000 annually, a figure that has not kept pace with television revenue growth. The Big Ten's media deal with CBS, Fox, and NBC runs through 2030 and pays the league more than $7 billion over seven years. Officiating budgets have grown, but not proportionally. The league trains officials through a centralized program, but the number of qualified referees has not scaled with the number of games. The result is predictable: the same crew working high-profile games in consecutive weeks, making mistakes visible enough to require public statements.

Sponsors and television partners notice. A botched call in a non-conference game is manageable. A botched call in a November game that affects College Football Playoff selection is expensive. The Big Ten's media partners pay for content that holds ratings, and ratings depend on perceived fairness. The conference has not released data on crew assignments or performance reviews, but internal discussions about expanding the officiating pool have circulated among athletic directors since July. The question is not whether to expand but whether the conference will fund it before or after a lawsuit arrives.

The other concern is crew fatigue. Officials are assigned games with minimal rest between high-intensity environments. The Nebraska-Maryland crew worked a night game in College Park on a Friday, then worked a noon kickoff in Ann Arbor the following Saturday. The turnaround is standard in professional officiating, but college officials are not full-time employees. Most hold separate careers. The league's travel reimbursement policy does not account for cross-country assignments in a conference that now spans from New Jersey to Los Angeles.

Western Michigan's athletic director, Dan Bartholomae, declined to comment beyond a brief statement Monday. Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel issued no statement. The silence is typical. Schools do not publicly criticize conference officiating, even when the mistake is acknowledged. The Big Ten's statement included no mention of disciplinary action or crew reassignment.

Watch for the Big Ten's officiating coordinator to address conference athletic directors at the next quarterly meeting in early November. The league is expected to discuss crew expansion and whether to hire additional full-time officials for the 2025 season. The College Football Playoff selection committee meets for the first time on October 29. The first rankings will be released November 5. Any officiating mistake in a top-25 game after that date will carry playoff implications, and the conference knows it.

The real deadline is not the playoff but the next television negotiation cycle. The Big Ten's media deal runs through 2030, but preliminary discussions for the next cycle begin in 2027. Networks will evaluate officiating quality as part of product consistency. The conference can address the referee shortage now, or it can explain it later when the leverage is worse.

The takeaway
Big Ten expansion to 18 teams created a referee shortage the league has not funded its way out of, with playoff-selection pressure arriving in three weeks.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
