Nike signs six Georgia players in one day, $0 disclosed, portfolio approach replaces star bets

Simultaneous NIL announcement suggests athletic brands are building team-level depth charts instead of chasing individual Heisman campaigns.

Nike announced name, image and likeness deals with six Georgia football players on the same day, none of them quarterbacks. The brand did not disclose contract values. The coordinated timing—six athletes, one program, no dollar figures—marks a shift from the early NIL playbook, when brands signed individual stars and published the numbers.

The six: defensive back Malaki Starks, linebacker Jalon Walker, tight end Oscar Delp, offensive lineman Tate Ratledge, defensive lineman Mykel Williams, and running back Branson Robinson. Georgia is a Nike school. All six players are draft-eligible within two years. Nike already holds the apparel contract with the university, which runs through 2031 at an estimated $9.4 million annually. The NIL agreements layer individual athlete marketing rights on top of the institutional deal, giving Nike control over both the team's on-field look and the off-field content.

The portfolio approach solves two problems. First, it hedges Heisman risk. A single quarterback signing can cost $500,000 and deliver nothing if the player transfers or the team underperforms. Six mid-tier deals spread across positions cost less in aggregate and generate more social reach when the team wins. Second, it blocks competitors. Adidas, Under Armour, and New Balance have been picking off high-profile college athletes at non-partner schools. By signing depth across a championship roster, Nike occupies shelf space before rivals can establish beachheads. Georgia won the national title in 2021 and 2022, finished this season 11-2, and sends an average of eight players to the NFL Draft each year. The brand is buying future pros at college prices.

The timing matters. The NCAA's settlement with House v. NCAA is expected to finalize in April 2025, creating a revenue-sharing framework that will let schools pay athletes directly up to $20.5 million per year starting in the 2025-26 academic year. Once schools distribute cash, the NIL market splits into two tiers: institutional payments for on-field performance and third-party endorsements for off-field IP. Nike is positioning early in the endorsement tier, locking players into brand relationships before school money complicates the compensation stack. If Georgia pays Starks $400,000 in revenue share next fall, Nike's existing contract insulates the brand from renegotiation leverage.

Sponsor strategists will note the absence of disclosed deal values. Early NIL contracts were announced with dollar amounts to generate press and establish market comps. The shift to undisclosed terms suggests brands are moving from PR plays to margin discipline. Family offices sizing NIL funds have cited valuation opacity as a barrier to entry; coordinated signings with no public benchmarks make peer pricing harder, which benefits incumbents with proprietary data. Nike has signed more than 80 college athletes since NIL rules changed in 2021, giving the brand a pricing curve smaller players lack.

Georgia plays in the SEC, which will distribute an estimated $51.3 million per school in media revenue this year, the highest of any conference. Programs with large media payouts can afford to let brands handle athlete marketing while the athletic department focuses on competitive spend. Schools in smaller conferences face pressure to bundle NIL as a recruiting edge, which creates fragmentation. Nike's Georgia portfolio suggests the brand is prioritizing programs where institutional revenue is high and NIL is cleanly separated, reducing execution risk.

Watch for similar announcements at Texas, Alabama, and Ohio State before spring practice. Nike holds apparel deals at all three and has not yet deployed the Georgia playbook at scale elsewhere. Expect competitor response from Adidas at Miami and Under Armour at Maryland, both brand partner schools with NFL draft pipelines. The House settlement's final approval hearing is scheduled for April 7, 2025; brands will accelerate signings ahead of that date to lock pre-settlement economics.

The six players have a combined 1.2 million Instagram followers. None have entered the transfer portal.

The takeaway
Nike signed six Georgia players in one day with no disclosed terms, signaling athletic brands now prefer team-level depth charts over star bets as NIL matures.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
