Matt Rhule fires entire Nebraska staff for second time in three years

The third coordinator overhaul since 2023 puts Rhule's $74M buyout back in play if 2026 goes sideways.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule dismissed his entire on-field coaching staff Monday, the second total rebuild since he took the job in November 2022. The Huskers went 6-6 in 2024, missing a bowl for the eighth consecutive season, and Rhule now has 13 months to prove the third iteration can do what the first two could not.

Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield, defensive coordinator Tony White, and special teams coordinator Ed Foley are all gone. Rhule brought Satterfield from South Carolina in Year One, replaced him with Dana Holgorsen midseason in 2024, then fired Holgorsen after nine games when the offense ranked 101st nationally in third-down conversion rate. White arrived from Syracuse with a strong reputation; Nebraska finished 87th in total defense. The quick exits suggest Rhule is working backward from a narrow 2026 window rather than building toward 2027.

The buyout structure matters here. Rhule signed an eight-year, $74M deal with a sliding buyout that drops from $50M after Year Three to $35M after Year Four. Athletic director Troy Dannen, who came over from Washington in July 2024, has already demonstrated he will pull triggers early—he fired volleyball coach John Cook in February after one bad season, ending a 24-year run. If Nebraska misses a bowl again in 2025, the financial pain becomes manageable for a program that just cleared $18M in Big Ten media distribution.

Rhule's coordinator churn is now comparable to Scott Frost's final two years, when Frost cycled through five offensive coordinators and three defensive coordinators before getting fired in September 2022 with $15M still owed. Frost had recruiting momentum and fan patience; Rhule has neither. Season ticket renewals are due in April, and the program has lost 8,200 season ticket holders since 2019, per university filings. Memorial Stadium still sells out, but the waitlist is gone and single-game inventory sat unsold in November.

The coordinator search will move fast. Rhule is expected to target sitting Power Four coordinators rather than NFL position coaches, per two sources with knowledge of the process. Names circulating include Tulane offensive coordinator Joe Craddock, who worked with Rhule at Temple, and Kansas State defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman, whose contract includes a $1.2M buyout if he leaves before June. Both have existing Midwest recruiting ties, which matters in a league where Nebraska now competes with Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State for the same linemen.

The timing also aligns with the NCAA's new December signing period structure, which pushes more recruiting decisions into January and February. Rhule has 19 commits for the 2025 class, ranked 28th nationally by 247Sports, and three decommitted after the season ended. A quick hire could stabilize the class before National Signing Day on February 5, but waiting risks losing commitments to schools with settled staff.

Watch for coordinator announcements by January 20, which would give the new staff three weeks to recruit before Signing Day. If Rhule waits past that date, expect more decommitments and a reliance on the transfer portal, where Nebraska has been active but uneven—the Huskers added 22 transfers in 2024, including quarterback Dylan Raiola, who threw for 2,595 yards but posted a 52.1 QBR, ranking 67th nationally. The portal opens again on December 9, and Rhule will need to land immediate-impact players to offset recruiting losses.

Dannen has not commented publicly, but his silence is itself a signal. He did not issue a statement of support after the final game, and he skipped the traditional end-of-season press conference, instead sending Rhule out alone. The next public event is the Big Ten spring meetings in May, by which point Nebraska will either be rebuilding momentum or preparing for another expensive conversation.

The takeaway
Rhule's third staff in three years puts his $35M Year Four buyout in range if 2026 misses a bowl again.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
