NFL Closes 2026 Coaching Carousel in Record Time—Evero to Panthers Completes Roster

All ten vacancies filled before voluntary workouts begin, ending the fastest hiring cycle in a decade.

The NFL's 2026 head coaching carousel concluded Thursday with the Carolina Panthers naming Ejiro Evero as head coach, completing a hiring cycle that resolved 10 vacancies in 19 days—the fastest full-cycle turnover since 2016, when nine openings closed in 23 days.

The league fired or accepted resignations from 10 head coaches between January 6 and January 13. By January 25, every vacancy had closed. The last hire in 2025's cycle—Aaron Glenn to the Jets—came February 3, nine days slower despite two fewer openings. The acceleration reflects a narrower candidate pool and owners unwilling to wait past the Super Bowl, which falls February 9 this year.

Evero, 38, spent three seasons as a defensive coordinator—one with Denver, two with Carolina—and interviewed for six head coaching jobs over that span without an offer until now. His defensive unit ranked fourth in EPA allowed per play in 2025 despite Carolina finishing 5-12. Tepper, the Panthers owner, previously fired Matt Rhule mid-season in 2022 and Reich after 11 games in 2023. Evero's contract, not yet disclosed, is expected to mirror the four-year, $28 million framework Chicago gave Ben Johnson, the top coaching salary of this cycle.

The speed matters because it compresses coordinator hiring windows. Teams with new head coaches typically wait to name coordinators until their HC completes playoff obligations. This year, eight of the ten new hires came from non-playoff staffs, allowing immediate coordinator searches. The Rams, Seahawks, and Bears have already announced offensive and defensive coordinator hires. The Panthers named Brad Idzik, formerly Seattle's OC, as Evero's offensive coordinator on Wednesday, one day before Evero's official announcement—a sign Tepper had internally committed earlier than reported.

The implications extend to free agency. Teams with settled coaching staffs enter March signings with clearer scheme fits and recruiting pitches. The Panthers, Jaguars, and Jets—each carrying more than $50 million in cap space—can now target edge rushers and coverage linebackers who fit Evero's and Mike Macdonald's (Jacksonville) 3-4 fronts. Meanwhile, the Saints and Raiders, who hired offensive-minded head coaches in Kliff Kingsbury and Pete Carroll, are expected to pursue veteran quarterbacks; both teams visited with free-agent-to-be Sam Darnold during the Senior Bowl, where Carroll worked as an advisor.

Two patterns emerged. First, experience mattered less than expected. Four of the ten hires have never been head coaches at any level—Johnson, Evero, Brian Flores (Las Vegas), and Liam Coen (Jacksonville). Second, owners bypassed the typical interview gauntlet. The Broncos hired Vance Joseph after one formal interview, conducted in a Denver hotel suite the day after Sean Payton's resignation. Joseph had been Philadelphia's defensive coordinator; the timeline suggests preliminary conversations occurred before Payton's announcement.

Coordinator salaries are rising in parallel. The league does not publish assistant pay, but agents familiar with this cycle report defensive coordinator offers in the $3 million to $4 million range for candidates with coordinator experience, up from $2 million to $2.5 million in 2024. Offensive coordinators with play-calling track records are commanding $3.5 million to $5 million. The increase reflects the risk of losing top assistants to college programs, which have begun offering coordinators multi-year deals above $2.5 million—previously rare outside head coach contracts.

The Panthers specifically are worth watching because Tepper has now hired five head coaches in seven years: Rivera (inherited), Rhule, Wilks (interim), Reich, and Evero. The organization's front office continuity has been similarly thin; GM Scott Fitterer was dismissed last November, replaced by Dan Morgan, previously the assistant GM. Evero inherits a roster with $18 million in dead cap from Rhule-era contracts and a quarterback situation unresolved after benching Bryce Young, the 2023 first overall pick, midseason.

Watch for how quickly Evero's staff finalizes. The league's voluntary offseason program begins April 21, 84 days away. Teams typically announce position coach hires in waves—offensive and defensive line coaches first, then specialists. The Panthers have 12 open position coach roles after Reich's staff departed. How fast those fill signals whether Evero's network is shallow or deep, and whether Tepper is willing to pay above-market to accelerate the process.

The carousel is closed, but the evaluation window is open. By June minicamp, we will know which hires were decisive and which were desperate.

The takeaway
Ten NFL vacancies filled in 19 days—fastest cycle in a decade—compressing coordinator markets and giving settled teams a free-agency advantage.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
