NFL Completes Ten Head Coach Hires Without Adding a Single Black Coach

Zero of ten openings went to Black candidates, dropping league total from six to three and triggering Rooney Rule enforcement questions.

The NFL closed its 2026 hiring cycle with ten new head coaches and zero Black hires, reducing the league's total Black head coaches from six to three after Ben Johnson (Chicago), Mike Vrabel (New England), Liam Coen (Jacksonville), Aaron Glenn (New York Jets), Joe Brady (Washington), Kellen Moore (Philadelphia), Matt Eberflus (Los Angeles Chargers), Brian Schottenheimer (Dallas), Pete Carroll (Las Vegas), and Bobby Slowik (New Orleans) filled every opening. Patriots assistant Thomas Brown, interviewed by multiple clubs, publicly questioned whether teams conducted Rooney Rule interviews with genuine intent or simply to satisfy protocol.

The league now employs three Black head coaches—Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh), Raheem Morris (Atlanta), and DeMeco Ryans (Houston)—down from eight at the 2021 peak and matching the three employed in 2011, the year Ray Horton and Hue Jackson got interim tags. The Rooney Rule, implemented in 2003, requires teams to interview at least two external minority candidates for head coaching vacancies. Enforcement mechanisms remain vague. The league has fined zero teams for Rooney Rule violations since expanding the policy in 2020 to include general manager searches and require one in-person minority interview before any hiring decision.

Brown's comments arrive as Washington completes its first week under Joe Brady, the 35-year-old former Bills offensive coordinator whose hiring followed interviews with Brown, Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris (subsequently hired by Atlanta in 2024), and Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore (subsequently hired by Philadelphia in 2026). Brady's Washington contract includes language tying portions of his $8 million annual salary to sponsorship activation targets, a structure team president Jason Wright implemented to align coaching compensation with commercial outcomes. Wright, the league's first Black team president, hired Brady after ownership group led by Josh Harris completed its $6.05 billion acquisition in 2023.

The concentration of Black coordinators in offensive roles—fourteen of 32 offensive coordinators are Black, versus four defensive coordinators—should theoretically create a robust candidate pipeline, given that seven of the ten 2026 hires came from offensive backgrounds. Yet the conversion rate remains statistically improbable. Brown holds a master's degree from Duke, coached running backs for Sean McVay's Rams before moving to New England, and interviewed for four openings this cycle. His public skepticism reflects a quiet consensus among Black assistant coaches: the interview process functions as procedural theater rather than genuine evaluation.

Sponsor response will clarify whether the league faces commercial pressure beyond optics management. Procter & Gamble, which increased NFL spend to $240 million in 2025 across Gillette, Tide, and Old Spice, ties activation budgets to diversity benchmarks negotiated with each property. A person familiar with the NFL's P&G relationship said the consumer-goods giant has requested demographic data on head coaching searches for the past two cycles. Microsoft, whose $400 million annual NFL partnership includes Surface sideline tablets and cloud infrastructure, declined to comment on diversity provisions in its contract but noted that its standard sports sponsorship agreements, renewed in 2024, include representation language.

The immediate consequence runs through the coordinator market. Teams replacing outgoing coordinators—a secondary hiring wave that typically peaks in late May—will face scrutiny over whether they promote Black assistants into vacant coordinator roles or hire externally. Jacksonville's Liam Coen has already named three coordinators, all white. Dallas installed Brian Schottenheimer as head coach after Schottenheimer spent one season as offensive coordinator, a promotion that bypassed defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and assistant head coach/running backs coach Skip Peete, both of whom hold longer tenures and deeper organizational knowledge.

The league office has not announced any formal review of 2026 hiring processes, nor have club owners signaled willingness to adopt binding mechanisms beyond the current interview-minimum rule. Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the topic in a 90-second segment during the owners' spring meeting in Phoenix, noting that "our commitment to diversity remains constant" without detailing enforcement steps. The NFL's diversity advisory committee, which includes twelve members and last met publicly in October 2025, has no scheduled meetings before training camps open in late July.

What to watch: Coordinator hiring continues through June, with six teams still finalizing offensive or defensive coordinator appointments. The league's spring meeting resumes May 21-23 in Atlanta, where Rooney Rule modifications could surface if ownership shows appetite for reform. Sponsor renewals for FedEx ($12 million annually, expires December 2026), Bud Light ($50 million, expires March 2027), and Verizon ($300 million, expires January 2028) will test whether diversity performance affects contract terms. Brown's agent, Jimmy Sexton, represents fourteen NFL head coaches and has begun circulating a memo to front offices detailing interview-to-hire conversion rates by candidate race across the past five cycles. Those numbers will either embarrass teams into behavioral change or confirm that the current structure produces exactly the outcomes ownership prefers.

The league enters Year 23 of the Rooney Rule with the same number of Black head coaches it employed in Year 8. The pipeline exists. The interviews happen. The hires do not.

The takeaway
Zero Black head coaches hired across ten openings drops NFL total to three, matching 2011 levels despite expanded Rooney Rule requirements.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
