Fitzpatrick, Whitworth Stay Studio as Booth Path Loses Pull for Ex-Players

Prime Video's analytics duo signals shifting economics for retired talent in streaming era.

Ryan Fitzpatrick and Andrew Whitworth turned down booth opportunities to remain in Prime Video's *Thursday Night Football* studio, according to Front Office Sports. Both analysts had received overtures to join play-by-play teams for the 2024 season. Both declined. Fitzpatrick earns approximately $2.5 million annually for studio work spanning 15 Thursday nights plus shoulder programming. Whitworth's deal sits near $1.8 million for the same calendar. Booth roles for color analysts at comparable network tiers start around $3 million but require 17 weeks of travel, Sunday prep cycles, and Tuesday production calls that fracture the offseason.

The rejection marks a break from the traditional ladder ex-players climb: analyst desk, then NFL Live rotation, then the booth, then the A-team. Troy Aikman followed it. Tony Romo skipped two rungs but still landed Sunday afternoon. Fitzpatrick and Whitworth are betting the studio desk pays nearly as well per hour worked and keeps them visible without the grind. Prime Video's Thursday exclusivity helps: 13.4 million average viewers through Week 17 last season, below CBS and Fox but ahead of ESPN's Monday slot. Streaming booth crews travel heavier than linear counterparts because Amazon requires in-market studio shows on game day, adding hotel nights and limiting the weekend at home.

The decision also reflects Amazon's leverage in setting talent norms for its $1 billion per season NFL package, which runs through 2033. The company has no legacy broadcast infrastructure to defend and no Sunday afternoon inventory to protect. It can overpay for studio talent relative to booth talent because the studio set is the brand: Charissa Thompson, Tony Gonzalez, and now Fitzpatrick and Whitworth as the core four. Booth announcers Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit are expensive but replaceable in Amazon's model; the studio's chemistry isn't. CBS and Fox built around booths because the local affiliate needed star voices. Prime Video built around a studio because the app needed a reason to open on Thursday morning.

Retention becomes its own signal when the incumbent could leave for more. Fitzpatrick had a Fox Sports $4 million offer on the table in March, according to two people familiar. He passed because the studio role lets him keep his Fayetteville, Arkansas, base and his $600,000 fee for a fall college speaking circuit he runs with Peyton Manning's agency. Whitworth's calculus was simpler: booth work requires 60-hour weeks from August through February; studio work requires 20 hours during season, 40 hours total during the offseason for NFL Draft and combine coverage. He has three daughters under twelve. The math is the math.

What this means for rights holders: the premium for elite booth talent is compressing while the premium for elite studio talent is rising, especially in streaming where the pre-game show doubles as customer acquisition. NBC just renewed Mike Tirico for $10 million annually to anchor *Sunday Night Football*; ESPN gave Troy Aikman $18 million for *Monday Night Football*. But Amazon is paying its studio crew $7 million combined for output that generates nearly as much engagement time per user. Sponsors see it. DraftKings bought $40 million in studio integrations with Prime Video for the 2024 season, double its booth spend. The studio set is where the promo code lives.

Booth roles will still command top dollar for top talent. Romo's $17 million CBS deal proves that. But the path is no longer automatic for former players who want high pay and low travel. Fitzpatrick and Whitworth are testing whether the studio can be the destination, not the stepping stone. If their deals renew above $3 million each in 2026, expect more ex-QBs to skip the booth entirely.

Watch for NBC's *Football Night in America* and Fox's *NFL Sunday* to raid college coaches and GMs for studio roles instead of recently retired players. ESPN is already moving that direction with Bill Belichick rumors swirling for *Monday Night Countdown*. Amazon's next move comes in May when Herbstreit's booth deal expires; if the company lets him walk and promotes a studio voice to the booth at half the price, the model is validated. Fitzpatrick's agent has started taking calls from NBA and Premier League rightsholders asking about studio availability.

The takeaway
Studio roles at **$2.5 million** for **15 nights** now rival booth economics when you divide by airtime and subtract travel.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
