Sixers Lock Dean Wade for $29M Over Three Years, See Deadline Optionality

Front office treats veteran wing as trade chip and depth insurance while Brown-James drama consumed the room.

The Philadelphia 76ers signed Dean Wade to a $29 million deal over three years during the summer window. No press conference. No Daryl Morey quote in the release. The contract includes team options in years two and three, league sources confirm, which matters more than the average annual value.

Wade arrives from Cleveland with a profile Morey has chased since Houston: 6-foot-9, shoots 38.9% from three over the past two seasons, guards fours and some fives, no ball-handling burden. He played 22 minutes per game last season in the Cavaliers' rotation and logged 62 games, his healthiest stretch since entering the league. The Sixers paid $9.67 million annually for a player who will not require plays called for him and will not complain when Joel Embiid holds the ball for 18 seconds.

The structure signals intent. A three-year deal with back-end options gives Philadelphia a tradeable contract at the February deadline, when teams hunting depth for a playoff push pay premiums for veterans on expiring or near-expiring money. Wade's salary slots neatly into trade exceptions and can be aggregated with Tobias Harris' eventual replacement money if Morey needs to match salaries in a midseason acquisition. The $29 million total is low enough that a contender does not blink at the commitment, high enough that Wade clears the minimum-contract noise.

The timing also matters. Philadelphia signed Wade 11 days after the Jaylen Brown extension talks stalled and four days before LeBron James' camp leaked interest in a Sixers meeting, according to reporting timelines. The front office was already building the next layer while the All-Star drama played out in public. Wade does not move the needle on a championship roster alone, but he fills the gap between Harris' departure and whatever wing Morey finds in February when a team's season collapses and a rotation player becomes available for a protected first-round pick.

The Cavaliers did not match, which tells you what Cleveland thinks about paying rotation wings in a tax year. Wade's agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, has placed 14 clients on new contracts this summer, and the Wade deal ranks in the middle tier by total value but carries the cleanest optionality. Bartelstein knows Morey will take his call in February if a better situation opens.

Wade is expected to start training camp in the backup four rotation behind whoever starts next to Embiid. The Sixers open preseason on October 8 against the Celtics in Boston, where Wade will guard Jayson Tatum for 12 minutes and remind everyone why Morey signed him. The team options kick in after this season, and Philadelphia will decide whether to keep Wade or flip him before the February 8 trade deadline, when contenders start calling about depth.

Morey has $11 million in remaining cap space and one roster spot open. He is not done.

The takeaway
Wade's **$29M** deal gives Sixers a tradeable veteran wing with team options, positioning Morey for February deadline moves.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
