WNBA franchises double in 24 months. College football hypotheticals hit $2B. Capital shops inventory.

Three December valuation reports map where family offices and PE actually put the bids in.

Forbes published its annual WNBA franchise valuations on December 12th. The average team is now worth $190 million, up from $95 million in December 2023. The Golden State Valkyries, which have not played a game, carry a $150 million entry fee already priced in. The Athletic's college football hypothetical study, released December 18th, valued Ohio State at $2.1 billion and Alabama at $1.9 billion on a going-concern basis, despite NCAA rules prohibiting outright ownership. CNBC's soccer study, updated December 20th, found 14 clubs worth more than $1 billion, up from 11 in 2024.

The studies are uncoordinated but directionally identical. Sports assets with defined revenue streams, broadcast windows, and league governance are appreciating faster than private equity's cost of capital. WNBA franchises doubled because the league signed an 11-year, $2.2 billion broadcast deal in July 2025. College football's hypothetical valuations exist because conference realignment created pseudo-franchises with locked media rights through 2036. Soccer's numbers reflect Gulf state acquisition of Newcastle ($430 million in 2021, now worth $950 million per CNBC), stabilizing Premier League pricing for everyone else.

The capital is not tourism. Family offices that bought MLS teams in 2018 are now shopping NWSL and WNBA expansion slots. Three European private equity firms that bought minority Serie A stakes are now in conversations with Ligue 1 clubs, according to two people with direct knowledge. The WNBA had 14 ownership group inquiries for its last expansion slot; league officials expect 20-plus for the next round. College football's theoretical valuations matter because athletic directors are already structuring like franchises: Ohio State's athletic department revenue was $251 million in fiscal 2024, with $69 million in profit. The school is now exploring joint ventures with apparel companies that look suspiciously like kit sponsorships, not endorsement deals.

The constraint is inventory. There are 12 WNBA teams, 30 NBA teams, 32 NFL teams. Expansion is controlled, and league governance is slow. College football is legally unavailable. That pushes capital into soccer, where 18 leagues across Europe, South America, and Asia allow majority ownership with fewer approval layers. The CNBC study noted that $4.3 billion in soccer transactions closed in 2025, a 31% increase over 2024. The next WNBA expansion window opens in Q2 2026. Three ownership groups are already circulating deck presentations, per a league source.

Watch for WNBA expansion announcements by June 2026, likely targeting Portland or Denver. College football's next inflection point is the House settlement final approval in March 2026; if schools can legally pay players, institutional investors will structure debt instruments against future revenue. European soccer's January transfer window will show whether Gulf-backed clubs are still bidding aggressively; Newcastle is reportedly shopping for a forward north of £80 million.

The takeaway
Capital is mapping every sports asset with broadcast locks and governance clarity; valuation multiples compress when inventory does.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
