Mariners Sign Yusei Kikuchi to Minor-League Deal, Add Rotation Insurance at Zero Guaranteed Cost

Former Seattle starter returns on split contract after Toronto, Houston stints — veteran depth without payroll exposure.

The Seattle Mariners signed left-hander Yusei Kikuchi to a minor-league contract with an invitation to major-league spring training, adding rotation depth for September without touching their luxury-tax calculation. Kikuchi, 33, posted a 3.93 ERA across 115 innings for Toronto and Houston in 2024 before clearing waivers in late August. The deal carries no guaranteed money unless he reaches the 26-man roster, which means Seattle's front office gets a free look at a pitcher who threw 124 innings of 4.41 ERA ball for them from 2019 through mid-2021.

Kikuchi spent four seasons in Seattle after signing a three-year, $43 million deal out of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball in January 2019. The Mariners traded him to Toronto at the 2021 deadline for prospects, part of the reset that preceded their current competitive window. He re-signed with Toronto on a three-year, $36 million extension in March 2022, then was flipped to Houston at this year's trade deadline when the Blue Jays fell out of contention. Houston designated him for assignment on August 23 after he allowed nine runs in 10.1 innings across three September starts. No club claimed him on waivers, making him a free agent eligible to sign anywhere for the prorated major-league minimum.

The timing solves a specific roster problem. Seattle entered the final month with Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, George Kirby, and Bryce Miller locked into four rotation spots, but the fifth spot has cycled through Bryan Woo (shoulder inflammation), Emerson Hancock (forearm tightness), and Jhonathan Díaz (oblique strain) since mid-July. None of those three is expected back before rosters expand on September 1, and the Mariners are 2.5 games behind Houston for the American League West lead with 28 games remaining. Kikuchi gives them a veteran who has faced AL West lineups 47 times in his career and knows Seattle's pitching infrastructure. If he reaches the majors, the prorated minimum salary for September is roughly $85,000—a rounding error against Seattle's $143 million opening-day payroll.

The move also reflects a broader roster-construction bet: Seattle's front office has resisted deadline rentals and avoided taking on salary all summer, preferring to let younger pitchers fail rather than guarantee money to mid-rotation arms. Kikuchi's deal threads that same needle. If he pitches well at Triple-A Tacoma, he's a cheap September call-up. If he doesn't, the Mariners release him and pay nothing. Toronto and Houston already covered his 2024 salary through August, so Seattle is effectively renting a pitcher someone else developed and someone else paid.

The broader context: Seattle has the fifth-lowest ERA in baseball (3.68) but ranks 22nd in runs scored (4.12 per game), which means every marginal pitching upgrade compounds. Adding a 3.93 ERA arm—even one with a 1.34 WHIP and a 19.4% strikeout rate that suggests regression risk—improves Seattle's depth without requiring a corresponding offensive bet. The front office is, in effect, doubling down on run prevention because run creation remains unsolved.

Watch whether Kikuchi makes his first Tacoma start by September 3, which would align him for a potential major-league call-up during Seattle's September 10-12 series against the Yankees. If Woo or Hancock returns healthy before then, Kikuchi becomes organizational depth. If neither does, Seattle gets a veteran starter for the price of a Triple-A per diem.

The deal also tees up an offseason question: whether Seattle re-signs Kikuchi to a major-league deal if he pitches well in September. He'll be a free agent again in November, and the Mariners have $47 million coming off the books from expiring contracts. A reunion at one year, $8 million would fit Seattle's pattern of buying low on pitchers with Japan ties and mechanical tweaks worth exploring. For now, though, the bet is free—and in a division race this tight, free bets with 115-inning track records are worth taking.

The takeaway
Seattle adds rotation insurance without payroll risk, solving depth problem while preserving offseason flexibility on known quantity.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship.
