Leonard Williams extends with Seahawks through 2027, locks $64.5M defensive tackle spend

Seattle secures the 30-year-old lineman as Mike Macdonald builds continuity around a coordinator-turned-head-coach defense.

Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Leonard Williams signed a three-year extension worth $64.5 million with $45 million guaranteed, keeping him under contract through the 2027 season. Williams, who turns 31 in June, told reporters he plans to finish his career in Seattle, a declarative statement unusual for a veteran on a team that missed the playoffs and remains mid-rebuild.

The extension replaces the final year of Williams' previous deal and adds two new seasons. Seattle now has $21.5 million in annual cap committed to Williams through his age-33 season, the highest per-year number the franchise has ever allocated to an interior defensive lineman. Williams recorded 6.0 sacks and 34 pressures in 2024, his first season under head coach Mike Macdonald, whose defense ranked seventh in EPA per play after finishing 26th the prior year. The Seahawks went 10-7 but missed the NFC playoff bracket on tiebreakers.

The timing signals two things. First, general manager John Schneider is tying the core of Macdonald's defense together before the April draft, avoiding the risk of Williams testing free agency in March and triggering a bidding war. Second, it suggests Seattle believes its defensive identity is settled. Macdonald came from Baltimore with a reputation for exotic fronts and pressure packages; Williams, a hybrid three-technique who can play both even and odd fronts, is the kind of positional chameleon that scheme requires. Schneider is betting that continuity at the line of scrimmage, not scheme reinvention, is the path to contention.

The deal also removes uncertainty heading into the coordinator hiring cycle. Seattle has interviewed five candidates for its vacant offensive coordinator role, including former Tennessee OC Tim Kelly and Klint Kubiak, who left New Orleans after one season. Defensive continuity lets Macdonald spend February on offense, not damage control. Williams' extension keeps linebackers Ernest Jones IV and safety Julian Love—both free agents in 2026—from wondering if the defensive foundation is stable. Retention begets retention.

The risk is age and positional value. Williams will play his age-33 season in 2027, when the guaranteed money is still paying out. Interior defensive linemen historically fall off after 31, and Seattle is now locked into that decline curve. The Seahawks have $89 million in cap space for 2025, enough to absorb the deal, but the 2026 and 2027 windows tighten when quarterback Geno Smith's contract ($38.5 million cap hit in 2026) comes due. If Smith is not the long-term answer, Seattle will need cap flexibility to pivot. Williams' deal removes some.

Watch Seattle's next defensive signing. If Schneider extends either Jones or outside linebacker Boye Mafe before free agency, it confirms the defensive core is closed and the rebuild timeline has accelerated. If not, this is an isolated move to lock one irreplaceable piece. Also watch the offensive coordinator hire; if Seattle lands Kubiak or another pass-game specialist, the imbalance between offensive uncertainty and defensive stability becomes stark. The Seahawks have nine draft picks in April, including two in the top 50. How many go to offense versus defense will clarify whether Schneider believes the foundation is symmetric or lopsided.

Williams' deal is the first defensive extension Macdonald has influenced as a head coach. The coordinator who built Baltimore's 2023 top-ranked defense is now committing cap dollars to his vision. The Seahawks are betting he knows which veterans age well under his system. The alternative explanation is simpler: Seattle needed to keep one proven piece before the rest of the market opened, and Williams was the only one who would sign.

The takeaway
Seattle locks **$64.5M** into Leonard Williams through 2027, Macdonald's first core defensive bet as head coach.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
