Shelby Houlihan Signs Pro Deal With Oiselle After Four-Year Doping Ban

Distance runner returns to sponsorship market with Seattle brand after burrito defense failed, Nike contract expired.

Shelby Houlihan, the American 1,500m and 5,000m record holder, has signed with Seattle-based running apparel brand Oiselle, her first professional contract since completing a four-year doping suspension in January. The deal reunites Houlihan with a company she wore during her collegiate years at Arizona State, before Nike signed her in 2016.

Houlihan tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone in December 2020. She claimed contamination from a pork burrito purchased from a food truck near her training base in Portland. The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected the defense. Her ban ran through January 2025. Nike, which had paid her an estimated $150,000 annually on a deal that included Olympic bonus clauses, let the contract lapse without renewal. She was 28 when the ban started. She is now 32.

Oiselle's move carries reputational weight that larger brands avoid. The company, founded in 2007 by Sally Bergesen, built its identity around supporting women distance runners and aligning with athletes dropped by legacy sponsors. Kara Goucher joined Oiselle after leaving Nike in 2013. Lauren Fleshman, a two-time national champion, signed in 2012. Both athletes later became vocal critics of Nike's treatment of pregnant runners, testimony that shaped a Congressional hearing in 2019. Oiselle closed its retail stores in 2020 and now operates as a direct-to-consumer brand with roughly $10 million in estimated annual revenue, a fraction of Brooks or Hoka but culturally relevant in the post-collegiate distance market.

The financial terms are undisclosed. Comparable post-suspension deals in track suggest low five figures with performance incentives. Houlihan's return comes at a moment when American middle-distance depth is the strongest in two decades. Athing Mu holds the 800m Olympic title. Nikki Hiltz won the 1,500m at the 2023 U.S. Championships and came out as transgender and nonbinary, securing a New Balance deal extension. Elle St. Pierre ran 3:58 in the mile. Houlihan's American 1,500m record of 3:54.99, set in 2021 before the suspension took effect, still stands, but the pathway to another Olympic team requires proving race fitness in a compressed 18-month window before the 2026 World Championships in Tokyo.

Oiselle gains a name with competitive upside and tabloid recognition. Houlihan has 174,000 Instagram followers, double the count of most American distance runners not named Sydney McLaughlin. The brand's bet is that comeback narratives travel further than clean PR. The risk is associating with an athlete who failed a doping test, regardless of her explanation, in a sport where even a four-year ban leaves permanent stain. Oiselle has not commented publicly on the signing beyond a brief Instagram post. Houlihan has not granted interviews.

What to watch: Houlihan's race schedule through June. The U.S. Championships are in Eugene in late June. A sub-4:00 mile at the Prefontaine Classic in May would signal legitimate form. Oiselle's summer catalog will show whether Houlihan appears in campaign imagery or remains quietly listed on the roster page. Separately, Bergesen is known to be exploring a sale or investment round; aligning with Houlihan could be a signal to buyers that the brand still moves faster than its competitors.

The contract exists because Oiselle's margin of safety is reputation, not revenue. Larger brands underwrite Olympic medalists and NCAA champions with eight-figure budgets. Smaller brands sign the ones who can still run but whose names require a paragraph of explanation. Houlihan can run. The explanation is already written.

The takeaway
Oiselle signs Houlihan post-ban, trading reputational risk for cultural signal and Instagram reach in a depth-heavy U.S. distance market.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
