Cal Quantrill pitches seven shutout innings as Rangers blank Rays 2-0 on two hits

The right-hander's outing marks his second consecutive quality start and keeps Texas rotation depth intact through April's early churn.

Cal Quantrill held Tampa Bay to two hits over seven shutout innings Thursday night, carrying the Rangers to a 2-0 win at Globe Life Field. The right-hander struck out five, walked none, and threw 63 of 91 pitches for strikes. It was his longest outing since joining Texas on a one-year, $4 million deal in November.

The Rays managed singles in the second and fifth innings, both harmless. Quantrill retired the final eight batters he faced. Jose Leclerc and Kirby Yates combined for two scoreless frames to close it out. The Rangers offense scratched runs in the fourth and sixth, both on sacrifice flies—enough against Tampa Bay's bullpen game that sent five relievers through seven innings.

Quantrill's performance matters because Texas entered spring with rotation questions behind Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi. Jon Gray is on the injured list with a forearm issue. Max Scherzer retired. The Rangers signed Quantrill to a low-cost prove-it deal after he posted a 5.24 ERA in 29 starts for Colorado last season, his first year removed from elbow surgery. Two starts into 2025, he's thrown 12.1 innings with a 2.19 ERA and 11 strikeouts against 2 walks. If he holds, Texas has a mid-rotation arm at replacement cost—valuable for a club still carrying $191 million in player payroll after the World Series title run. If he falters, the front office will be shopping by Memorial Day, and the asking prices for mid-tier starters typically start at two Single-A arms or a lower-tier prospect.

The broader context is roster leverage. Texas declined to extend a qualifying offer to Jordan Montgomery after the 2023 title, watching him sign with Arizona. Montgomery's production has been uneven, and the Rangers avoided the long-term risk. Quantrill isn't Montgomery, but he doesn't need to be. He needs to be serviceable enough to let the front office wait until July to assess true need. Every solid start from Quantrill is a start the Rangers don't have to overpay for in June. The team sits 12-8 through three weeks, good for second in the AL West behind Houston.

Watch for Gray's rehab timeline. He's eligible to return in late April, and if he does, Texas will have six starters for five spots—immediate trade surplus or bullpen reinforcement. Quantrill's next start is Tuesday in Seattle, where he'll face a Mariners lineup that strikes out at the fifth-highest rate in the league. A repeat performance there puts him on the short list of pleasant surprises through the first month. The Rangers have 19 games before the calendar flips to May.

Gray threw a bullpen session Wednesday. The Rangers have not announced his next step.

The takeaway
Quantrill's two-start stretch gives Texas rotation depth at replacement cost while Jon Gray rehabs, deferring July trade urgency.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
