Hurley's extension removes NBA optionality through at least 2027 and resets the college coaching market above **$7M** annually.

Dan Hurley signed a two-year contract extension with UConn that runs through the 2031-32 season, the university confirmed Friday. Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal adds two years to a previous extension signed in June 2024 that ran through 2029-30 and carried an average annual value of $6.375M, making him the sport's third-highest-paid coach at the time.
Hurley, 52, turned down a six-year, $70M offer from the Los Angeles Lakers last June, three weeks after winning his second consecutive national championship. He has gone 141-58 in six seasons at UConn, including back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024, the program's fifth and sixth overall. The Huskies are 17-5 this season, ranked No. 25, after losing four rotation players to the NBA draft and transfer portal. His current roster includes five freshmen who signed knowing Hurley would be in Storrs long-term.
The extension matters because it removes Hurley from the NBA coaching carousel for at least another cycle and signals UConn's willingness to keep pace with an escalating college market. Kentucky's Mark Pope signed a five-year, $27.5M deal in April. Alabama's Nate Oats received a two-year extension in March worth $7.6M annually through 2030. Arkansas is paying John Calipari $7M per year. UConn athletic director David Benedict did not release dollar figures, but the university's previous willingness to match market rates and Hurley's Lakers leverage suggest he is now north of $7M annually, likely placing him among the sport's top-two earners alongside Calipari.
The timing also eliminates distraction during a rebuild year in which UConn must replace $15M in NBA draft talent, including lottery pick Stephon Castle. The program's brand equity remains extreme—its back-to-back titles generated $24M in incremental revenue for the athletic department across ticket sales, NCAA distributions, and apparel guarantees, per university financial filings. Hurley's contract stability helps Benedict negotiate a new multimedia rights deal with Learfield that expires in June 2026, as well as an apparel extension with Nike that runs through 2027. Both partners price coach tenure into renewal terms.
Watch for UConn to announce assistant coach salary pool increases by early March, when most Power Conference programs finalize their staff budgets. Hurley lost associate head coach Kimani Young to SMU in April and will need to retain the rest of his bench through a second recruiting cycle. The Big East's spring media day in May will likely include questions about UConn's long-term conference alignment, as the Big 12 continues quiet outreach to football-less programs. Hurley's extension does not include explicit buyout language tied to a conference move, but the university's 2024 contract included a $5M offset for professional opportunities that likely carries forward.
The Lakers will hire a different coach this summer. Hurley's phone stopped ringing six months ago.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
