Josh Hokit Calls for Gane Title Fight After Aspinall Vacancy, Dismisses Pereira

Heavyweight contender moves fast on belt opening while UFC weighs star power against divisional logic.

Josh Hokit released a statement Tuesday positioning himself for an immediate UFC heavyweight title fight against Ciryl Gane, hours after Tom Aspinall vacated the belt. The 11-1 New Zealand contender dismissed Alex Pereira's interim claim and framed himself as the clean divisional option while the promotion decides whether to prioritize rankings or pay-per-view appeal.

Aspinall's exit leaves the heavyweight division without a clear title picture for the first time since 2021, when Francis Ngannou held the belt and refused to fight Gane. Hokit's statement named Gane specifically—the French kickboxer is 13-2 and sitting at number three after a decision loss to Jon Jones in March 2023. Hokit argued that both men have recent wins over ranked opponents and neither needs a crossover star to validate the bout. Pereira, the former middleweight and light heavyweight champion, has never fought above 205 pounds and currently holds no ranking in the heavyweight division.

The timing matters because the UFC typically announces summer tentpoles in late spring. A Hokit-Gane title fight would slot cleanly into International Fight Week in July or the September pay-per-view in Paris, where Gane draws 300,000-plus local buys. Pereira, however, is the promotion's most reliable short-notice draw—his April rematch against Jamahal Hill did 650,000 buys on three weeks' promotion. If the UFC greenlights Pereira's heavyweight debut as a title fight, it signals the company values celebrity over divisional coherence, a shift that would set precedent for future vacancies across weight classes. Sponsors and venue partners prefer predictable calendars; star-driven chaos complicates kit commitments and international broadcast windows.

Hokit's case rests on a four-fight win streak and a decision victory over Curtis Blaydes in February, which moved him to number six in the rankings. He has not fought Gane, Jones, or Stipe Miocic—the three names most cited by hardcore fans when heavyweight matchmaking comes up. His statement avoided mentioning Jones entirely, a tactical choice that keeps him out of the former champion's negotiation leverage. Jones has not fought since the Gane win and is rumored to want a $15 million-plus guarantee for a comeback. If Hokit takes the belt against Gane, Jones would need to negotiate against a champion with no name-brand crossover, which limits his ask.

The Pereira angle is less about Hokit and more about the UFC's appetite for spectacle over structure. Pereira's manager, Jorge Guimaraes, has floated heavyweight since late 2023, but the fighter himself has been noncommittal. A jump to heavyweight for a title shot would bypass Tom Aspinall's seven-fight streak at the weight and Sergei Pavlovich's six straight knockouts before his loss to Aspinall. If the UFC books it anyway, Hokit's window closes until late 2025 at the earliest, assuming Pereira defends once before moving back down or vacating.

Watch whether Dana White names a title fight in the next two weeks. If no announcement comes by early June, the division likely waits until Jones's medical clearance in the fall, which would push all heavyweight matchmaking into 2026. Hokit's statement also mentioned Gane's availability—the Frenchman is not booked and has been in Paris training full-time since March. If Gane accepts publicly, the UFC either books it or explains why it didn't.

The takeaway
Hokit's title call tests whether UFC values heavyweight divisional order or Pereira's crossover draw after Aspinall exit.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
