Indiana reinstates Daley, Wyatt via injunction after TRO expires; NIL compliance window narrows

Two defensive linemen return mid-season through federal court order, raising enforcement questions for compliance officers across Power Four.

Indiana defensive linemen Stephen Daley and Kellan Wyatt are eligible again after a federal judge granted an injunction Monday, replacing a temporary restraining order that expired over the weekend. The two missed Indiana's 52-14 win over Western Kentucky in Week 3. They practiced Tuesday. They travel to UCLA on Saturday.

The university suspended both players September 9th citing "eligibility concerns" tied to NIL payments, then declined to specify which payments or which collective. The players' legal team filed for emergency relief September 11th. A Marion County judge issued the TRO September 13th, hours before kickoff against Western Kentucky, but the university kept them sidelined citing insufficient notice to activate roster changes. The injunction replaces that order and runs through the end of Indiana's season, barring appeal.

The case matters because it establishes a 72-hour procedural gap between court order and on-field eligibility that compliance departments did not plan for. Indiana cited roster logistics, but the subtext is insurance: if the players were later ruled retroactively ineligible, games played with them active could trigger NCAA forfeiture. That gap is now visible to every general counsel at every Power Four school. Expect tighter TRO language in the next eligibility dispute, naming specific game windows and requiring 48-hour roster activation. Expect universities to pre-clear emergency substitution protocols with conferences, because the next case will demand it.

The NIL payments themselves remain unspecified in public filings, which means one of three scenarios. First, a collective paid outside the university's preferred vendor network and the compliance office flagged it as impermissible inducement. Second, the payments came from a booster the school is quietly distancing itself from, and the suspension was reputation management dressed as compliance. Third, the payments were compliant but reported late, and the school overcorrected. The legal strategy suggests the third: the players' counsel did not contest the university's right to enforce rules, only the process and timeline. That is the posture of someone holding clean paperwork.

Indiana is 7-1 and ranked No. 13 in the AP poll, the program's best start since 1967. Daley and Wyatt are rotational contributors on a defensive line that ranks No. 22 nationally in rushing yards allowed per game. Their absence against Western Kentucky was cosmetic; their presence against UCLA, Washington, and Ohio State is not. Indiana's defensive coordinator, Chad Wilt, runs a four-man front that rotates eight linemen to maintain gap discipline in the fourth quarter. Losing two bodies in October would have meant more snaps for freshmen, more explosive plays allowed, and a tighter margin in one-score games. The injunction saves that margin.

Watch whether Indiana's compliance office publishes new NIL vendor guidelines before November. Watch whether the players' collective, unnamed in court filings, issues a public statement or quietly folds into a competitor. Watch whether other Big Ten programs ask their general counsels to pre-draft TRO response templates, because three schools already have. The NCAA's revised NIL enforcement guidance comes out in January. This case will be cited in the footnotes.

Indiana plays at UCLA Saturday at 3:30pm ET on NBC. Daley and Wyatt are listed as available on the depth chart released Wednesday.

The takeaway
Federal injunction creates new compliance timing risk for Power Four schools managing mid-season NIL disputes and roster activation windows.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
