Virginia Tech Opens Apparel RFP, Nike's $5.3M Annual Deal in Play

ACC program tests market after eight years with Nike, timed to July contract expiration.

Virginia Tech issued a request for proposals for its athletics apparel partnership on Monday, putting Nike's eight-year relationship with the Blacksburg program into open competition. The school's current deal, signed in 2017, pays approximately $5.3 million annually in cash and product—mid-tier for an ACC football program but below what Virginia Tech leadership now considers achievable.

The RFP sets a February 28 deadline for first-round submissions. Nike, adidas, and Under Armour have each confirmed receipt. The contract expires July 1, giving the athletic department four months to negotiate and finalize a successor agreement. Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock told the Board of Visitors in December that apparel economics had shifted materially since 2017, citing North Carolina's $8.4 million annual Nike renewal in 2022 and Louisville's $7.5 million adidas extension as new benchmarks. Virginia Tech averaged 56,203 fans per home football game in 2024, seventh in the ACC, a number sponsors use to model jersey sales and brand impressions.

The timing matters because three ACC programs come off contract in the next eighteen months: Virginia Tech this summer, NC State in January 2026, and Georgia Tech in June 2026. Apparel brands historically bid more aggressively when inventory opens in clusters, spreading fixed costs across multiple signings. Under Armour, which lost Notre Dame to adidas in 2024 and holds just four Power Four football programs, has told investors it will pursue "selective strategic additions" in 2025. adidas currently dresses Miami, Louisville, and NC State in the ACC; a Virginia Tech win would give it a fourth program in a conference where Nike holds eleven.

Virginia Tech's football program generated $58.7 million in revenue in fiscal 2023, per its NCAA filing, with apparel rights fees comprising roughly 9% of total athletic department sponsorship income. The school has not publicly disclosed whether it will require a minimum cash guarantee or accept higher product allocations in lieu of payment—a structure Under Armour has used at Maryland and South Carolina to lower upfront commitments. Babcock's office declined to specify evaluation criteria beyond "total economic value and brand alignment."

What to watch: First-round bids arrive by February 28. Finalist presentations typically occur in mid-March, with boards voting by early April to allow summer manufacturing lead time. NC State's apparel committee met with adidas and Nike officials in December; a coordinated ACC negotiating bloc has been discussed informally but not formalized. If Virginia Tech secures a $7 million-plus annual deal, it resets the floor for the next ACC tier—a floor NC State and Georgia Tech will reference in twelve months.

The school's maroon and orange color palette has not changed since 1896. The apparel partner almost certainly will.

The takeaway
Virginia Tech's RFP tests whether apparel brands will pay ACC-median rates for a top-10 ACC attendance program.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
