Morgan Tuck Named Connecticut Sun GM at 30, Youngest in WNBA

Former UConn champion takes front office at $50M valuation franchise, signaling accelerated exec pipeline.

Morgan Tuck, 30, has been named general manager of the Connecticut Sun, making her the youngest GM in the WNBA and one of three former players currently holding the title across the league's twelve franchises. The Sun announced the hire Tuesday morning. No contract term was disclosed. Tuck replaces interim GM Darius Taylor, who held the role for eight months following the departure of previous leadership.

Tuck played four seasons in the WNBA after winning back-to-back NCAA championships at UConn in 2015 and 2016. She retired in 2020 due to knee injuries and joined the Sun's front office as a basketball operations associate in 2021. She was promoted to director of player personnel in 2023, a role in which she evaluated draft prospects, managed the Sun's 12-player roster construction, and handled day-to-day coordination with head coach Stephanie White. The Sun reached the WNBA Finals in 2022, losing to Las Vegas in four games, and made the playoffs in 2023 and 2024.

The appointment lands during a valuation inflection point. The Sun were purchased in 2022 by a group led by Red Lobster heir Bill Ripken for a reported $50M, roughly double the league's previous franchise high. League-wide expansion fees have since climbed: Golden State's entry bid came in at $50M in 2023, while Portland's 2024 slot fetched north of $60M. Tuck now controls roster decisions, salary cap allocation (currently $1.46M per team for twelve players), and draft capital at a franchise valued closer to $75M on secondary market whispers. She inherits a core built around Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner, and DiJonai Carrington, with $310K in estimated cap space heading into the 2025 season.

The move reflects a broader shift in WNBA executive composition. Of the league's twelve GMs, three are now former players: Tuck, Nicki Collen at Dallas, and Natalie Williams at Utah (though Williams also serves as head coach). The average age of WNBA GMs has dropped to 43, down from 48 in 2019, as ownership groups—many of whom paid expansion premiums—push for faster decision cycles and tighter integration between playing and front office cultures. Tuck's hire also comes two months after the WNBA announced a $2.2B media rights deal with Disney, Amazon, and NBC, which begins in 2026 and will triple the league's annual broadcast revenue to roughly $200M. That cash influx is expected to increase salary caps, roster sizes, and the value of competent cap management.

Tuck's first major test arrives in April. The Sun hold the sixth pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, their highest selection since 2018. UConn's Paige Bueckers and USC's JuJu Watkins are expected to go in the top two; Tuck will likely face a decision between Notre Dame forward Sonia Citron and LSU guard Flau'jae Johnson at six. The Sun also have four players with expiring contracts after the 2025 season, including Bonner, who turns 38 in August. Tuck will negotiate extensions or prepare replacement paths before the July free agency window.

Meanwhile, the Sun's ownership group has been in quiet talks with Mohegan Sun Casino—the team's landlord and naming partner—about a new arena configuration. Current capacity sits at 9,300; league sources expect the Sun to push for 10,500 with updated suites to capture increased sponsor interest tied to the new broadcast deal. No timeline has been announced, but Tuck's role will include input on facility planning, as game-day revenue now represents roughly 28% of franchise income, up from 19% in 2021.

Tuck is the second UConn alum to take a WNBA GM role. Rebecca Lobo, her former program predecessor, never moved into front office management but has been ESPN's lead analyst since 2004. Tuck's path—player to ops associate to GM in four years—is faster than the typical seven-to-nine year climb seen in NBA front offices, where former players often spend a decade in scouting or player development before ascending. The WNBA's smaller org charts and lower exec salaries (Sun GM comp is estimated at $175K-$225K, roughly one-tenth of an NBA equivalent) create both opportunity and constraint.

The Sun open training camp April 27. Tuck's first roster will be set by May 15, two weeks before the season opener.

The takeaway
Tuck's promotion at 30 marks WNBA's shift toward ex-players in GM seats as franchise values triple and media money arrives.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
