UNC offensive line adds Ashley Cornwell; FCS women's coaching count still single digits

Greeley hire marks progress at the margins while Power Five programs remain closed systems.

The University of Northern Colorado hired Ashley Cornwell as offensive line coach this week, making her one of eight women currently coaching football at the NCAA Division I level. UNC competes in the FCS Big Sky Conference. The appointment does not crack the Power Five.

Cornwell joins a Greeley program that went 4-7 last season and ranked 102nd nationally in rushing offense. She previously coached at the high school level in Colorado and worked NCAA camps targeting women interested in coaching pipeline roles. Her salary was not disclosed; FCS assistant coaches typically earn $40,000 to $75,000 annually, twenty percent below FBS Group of Five equivalents.

The hire matters because the women's coaching bottleneck in football remains structural, not cultural. Of the 133 FBS programs, zero employ a woman as position coach. The last woman to hold an on-field FBS role was Jenn Welter at Arizona State in 2017—a training camp internship, unpaid. Since then, women have entered analytics departments, recruiting coordination, and player personnel. None have cleared the line into X's-and-O's authority with scholarship athletes.

Sponsors tracking women's sports momentum are learning football operates under different physics. The NWSL commands $4 million average club valuations and venture dollars; the WNBA just closed a media deal at $200 million annually. But football's coaching ladder remains a guild system. High school programs feed college staffs, college staffs feed NFL pipelines, and the entire structure runs on personal referrals brokered in hotel bars during spring clinics. Women's flag football added 15 new high school state sanction programs in the last two years, but that pipeline feeds athletes, not coaches. The NFL's Women's Forum invites 15 women annually to shadow coaching staffs; one has been hired to an assistant role in the last four cycles.

Greeley's move registers as competent local hiring, not paradigm shift. Cornwell has legitimate technical credentials and recruiting connections in Colorado's Front Range. The program needs both. But FCS hires do not move the NFL scouting needle, and NFL pressure is what changes Power Five behavior. When the league threatened draft pick forfeiture over Rooney Rule violations in 2022, minority coordinator hires doubled within 18 months. No equivalent mechanism exists for gender.

What's worth watching: whether Cornwell's offensive line shows statistical improvement by midseason. UNC plays 11 games starting August 30. If her unit improves pass protection by 15% or better—measured in sacks allowed per dropback—she becomes a case study for Group of Five programs looking to source cheaper, unconventional hires. FCS assistants who produce top-quartile position metrics typically get Group of Five interviews within two seasons. The question is whether a woman with those numbers gets the same call.

Meanwhile, Formula One announced a Sephora sponsorship for the F1 Academy women's series this week, marking the fourth major beauty or wellness brand to enter women's motorsport in 12 months. That capital is chasing audience growth—F1 Academy broadcasts drew 2.1 million unique viewers last season across streaming platforms. Women's football coaching has no broadcast component, no venture narrative, no celebrity investor syndicate. It has Cornwell, an offensive line, and 11 games to prove the obvious: competence scales regardless of who holds the clipboard.

The offensive line meets August 5 for fall camp. Cornwell's first media availability is scheduled for August 12.

The takeaway
Greeley hires a woman to coach o-line at FCS level; Power Five programs remain structurally closed with zero female position coaches.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
