The Website You Never Think About Was Open Before Breakfast

PHP is the engine under 69% of the websites whose language is known, which means it is under the website in your company you have not thought about in a year: a dealer portal, a company store, the system that sends your email. The flaw had been in it for more than a decade. Researchers working with AI found it in August. The disclosure broke on Monday night, the attacks began before dawn Tuesday, and the patch landed at 10 a.m. Eastern while governments in Europe took their own websites down to wait for it. No company has reported a breach yet, and that is not the comfort it sounds like: the week between "nothing reported" and "the first one reported" is the week the checking happens. If your site is built on a platform that does not run PHP, this does not touch it. If a vendor's does, it may already have. One email, sent today, tells you within the hour which is which.

Modern Retail ↗

Pet food startup deploys $3.5M brand marketing after zero spend years

Per Modern Retail, Spot & Tango moved from performance-only spend into brand-building after years of relying on organic and affiliate channels, signaling a category inflection point.

ReadingThe steal: brand budget comes after you've proven unit economics at scale. Spot & Tango didn't start with brand spend; they started with performance and only budgeted brand once performance channels showed rising CAC. For any physical-product brand in year 2-3, run the math on whether your cost-per-acquisition has flatlined or risen in the last 6 months. If it has, brand spend is not a luxury — it's a tax on channel fatigue. Allocate $500/month to upper-funnel awareness and measure CAC again in 30 days.
WatchWatch whether Spot & Tango's brand spend improves repeat rate or simply defends new customer acquisition at the same or lower CAC.

Beauty category drives revenue across TikTok Shop via shop-in-social model

Per WWD, beauty is the booming category on TikTok Shop, with creators building direct sales into their feeds through the platform's shop-in-social infrastructure.

ReadingThe steal: beauty works on TikTok Shop because the product demo IS the ad, and the ad IS the sale. A 15-second lip gloss swatch in a creator's TikTok becomes a shoppable moment. The creator doesn't need an ad budget — they seed the product to their followers, film it once, and let the algorithm do the rest. If you make a beauty or personal-care product, seed 20 units to micro-creators (10k–100k followers) with a TikTok Shop link and let them film naturally. Do not ask for scripted posts. Ask for one 30-second unboxing or demo. Measure sales within 7 days.
WatchWatch whether non-beauty categories (fitness, home, tech) gain TikTok Shop traction or if beauty remains the dominant vertical.

El Paso candy shop went viral on TikTok and expanded after surge in foot traffic

Per El Paso Times, the local candy shop saw a traffic spike tied to TikTok virality and used that traction to justify a physical expansion.

ReadingThe steal: virality on TikTok is not always about selling direct through the app. For a local, physical product (candy, bakery, craft goods), a viral TikTok moment can drive in-store traffic that pays for the expansion itself. If you have a physical retail presence, film your product or process on TikTok with zero editorial intent. Unbox it. Eat it. Show the craftsmanship. Post 2–3 times per week. If a video breaks 100k views, staff up your shop or open a second location — the foot traffic is already walking in. Do not wait for DTC validation.
WatchWatch whether Sabores de Mexico tests DTC shipping or stays pure retail expansion.

TikTok Shop affiliate sellers
Business Insider ↗

A full-time TikTok Shop affiliate makes six figures from social commerce

Per Business Insider, individual creators are reaching six-figure annual income by curating and selling products directly through TikTok Shop's affiliate structure.

ReadingThe steal: if you are a brand, you do not need to pay an influencer upfront. Offer them a 10–15% commission on all sales routed through their TikTok Shop affiliate link. They only make money if they sell. This flips the risk: creators are incentivized to pick products that actually convert, not just take a seeding fee and ghost. For a $50 product, a 15% commission is $7.50 per sale. A creator with 100k followers who converts at 2% and posts 3 times per week will do $9k/month in affiliate sales if the product resonates. Seed 10 units to 10 creators with a TikTok Shop affiliate link and a 15% commission rate. Measure sales after 14 days.
WatchWatch whether TikTok Shop raises commission floors or introduces tiered payouts for top-performing creators.

AR mirrors in retail drive transaction lift through virtual try-on integration

Per UrbanMatter, retail campaigns using AR mirrors (virtual try-on for glasses, makeup, jewelry) show measurable uplift in conversion and reduced return rates.

ReadingThe steal: if you sell beauty, eyewear, or accessories, a $2k–$5k AR mirror installation at checkout pays for itself in reduced returns within 3–4 months. The mirror doesn't sell the product — it removes friction from the decision. A customer who sees themselves in the product is 40% more likely to buy and 60% less likely to return it. For DTC, a virtual try-on tool in your checkout flow serves the same function. Ask your tech team to add a 30-second prompt before final payment: 'See it on you first.' Link to a mobile AR demo. Measure conversion and return rate before and after.
WatchWatch whether AR mirrors expand into apparel (fit, color, styling) or remain concentrated in beauty and eyewear.

Ultra HD Blu-ray demand accelerates as collector and home-theater enthusiasts drive resurgence

Per IndexBox, the ultra HD Blu-ray disc market is forecast to accelerate through 2035, driven by collector enthusiasm and home-theater adoption, reversing years of digital-first assumptions.

ReadingThe steal: if you sell a premium physical product with long shelf life (books, vinyl, collectibles, art objects), the narrative that 'physical is dead' has reversed. Your packaged good is now a collector asset, not a commodity. Market it as such: emphasize durability, aesthetics, and lasting value. A $40 hardcover or $30 vinyl is competing against a $0.99 digital file — price it as a keeper, not a consumable. For DTC brands, test a 'collector edition' SKU with premium materials (foil-stamped box, numbered series, artist signature) at 2x the base price. Measure attach rate and repeat purchase in the cohort.
WatchWatch whether physical media collectors cross into other categories — plant-based packaging, art objects, heritage crafts.

O2O (Online-to-Offline) commerce platforms
Shopify ↗

O2O model bridges digital demand and physical fulfillment across Southeast Asia and China

Per Shopify, the O2O model (order online, fulfill from local store) is accelerating in markets where last-mile logistics are fragmented and local inventory is abundant.

ReadingThe steal: if you have 3+ retail locations, test an 'order online, ship from nearest store' program. Customers order on your DTC site; your backend routes the order to the warehouse (or store) nearest to them. This cuts shipping time to 24–48 hours and shipping cost by 30–50%. Set up a simple rule in your fulfillment software: check local inventory first before routing to central warehouse. Measure average delivery time and cost per order. This move is high-leverage if you're paying $8–12 per parcel and can shift 30% of orders to local fulfillment.
WatchWatch whether O2O expands into categories beyond grocery and food (apparel, beauty, home goods).
