The Website You Never Think About Was Open Before Breakfast

PHP is the engine under 69% of the websites whose language is known, which means it is under the website in your company you have not thought about in a year: a dealer portal, a company store, the system that sends your email. The flaw had been in it for more than a decade. Researchers working with AI found it in August. The disclosure broke on Monday night, the attacks began before dawn Tuesday, and the patch landed at 10 a.m. Eastern while governments in Europe took their own websites down to wait for it. No company has reported a breach yet, and that is not the comfort it sounds like: the week between "nothing reported" and "the first one reported" is the week the checking happens. If your site is built on a platform that does not run PHP, this does not touch it. If a vendor's does, it may already have. One email, sent today, tells you within the hour which is which.

Walmart Connect now offers brand lift studies directly to sellers before holiday

Per Modern Retail, Walmart's sales team is directly approaching brand clients ahead of the holiday season offering on-site brand lift studies to justify ad spend and drive holiday deal commitments.

ReadingThe steal: run a lift study in your first week on a new channel, not your fifth. Brands waiting for proof after the sale are negotiating from weakness. Walmart is selling measurement upfront as a risk displacer — that's the real product here, not the ad impression. For a smaller brand: pick one marketplace (Amazon, Faire, your own site) and embed a lift study question into your first paid push — measure which messaging moves the buyer decision, then double down on that language for the rest of season. Cost is low; proof is priceless.
WatchWatch for Amazon and TikTok Shop to follow with their own direct lift offerings to undercut Walmart's pitch.

Coca-Cola consolidates North American media to Omnicom, builds bespoke team from scratch

Per Digiday, Coca-Cola moved its US and Canada media account to Omnicom, with the holding company's CEO John Wren committing to build a dedicated bespoke team rather than repurpose existing staffing from legacy accounts.

ReadingThe steal: when moving budget, do not negotiate rate — negotiate people. Name the lead strategist, the planner, and the media buyer in writing before you sign. Insist they don't rotate off for 12 months. Omnicom kept Coca-Cola by promising humans, not just tools. A smaller brand can demand the same in contract language: 'primary contact remains on account for minimum 12 months; escalation only by brand approval.' Dedicated attention is the only thing a holding company cannot outsource or automate.
WatchWatch for WPP to counter-pitch Coca-Cola on global creative consistency, since Omnicom now holds North America and WPP retains global remit.

Best Buy midnight Zelda launch event caps limited-edition Switch 2 consoles to drive foot traffic

Per MSN/Best Buy, the retailer is hosting midnight launch events on November 5, 2026, offering limited quantities of the Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Switch 2 console, engineered to sell out fast.

ReadingThe steal: do not launch in dead time. If you have a limited-drop product, launch it at 11 p.m. or 6 a.m., not noon — it breaks the pattern and feels like a moment. Midnight events drive retail foot traffic in a way 9 a.m. does not. For a DTC brand: drop limited stock at an off-hour and send a single notification. Skip the countdown, skip the email sequence. One drop, one time. The scarcity + timing novelty does the selling.
WatchWatch for follow-up merchandise (t-shirts, accessories) to be available only at the midnight event, extending the in-store dwell time.

e.l.f. targets Gen Z with Y2K nostalgia campaign, leaning into archive aesthetic

Per Marketing Dive, e.l.f. launched a campaign titled 'Campaign Trail: E.l.f. casts spell to deliver Y2K nostalgia to Gen Z,' positioning the brand's aesthetic around early-2000s cultural touchstones to resonate with younger consumers.

ReadingThe steal: if you sell to Gen Z, stop inventing. License or reference an archive moment — a defunct trend, an early version of your product, a decade-old design language — and frame it as 'rediscovered.' Gen Z does not want the future; they want a curated past. For a product brand: dig into your archives, photograph the oldest version of your product, and run a campaign called 'The Original' or 'Before [Year].' Position it as rare or collector-worthy. Nostalgia is the cheapest positioning available right now.
WatchWatch for e.l.f. to release limited-edition packaging referencing early-2000s makeup aesthetics.

ChatGPT drives 16% of initial product discovery, but only 9% convert to purchase

Per Digiday research, ChatGPT is where 16% of shoppers start their product search, but only 9% complete a purchase there, showing a wide gap between discovery and transaction.

ReadingThe steal: if you want to capture ChatGPT shoppers, do not try to sell inside ChatGPT. Instead, optimize your product pages and review sections for someone who just asked an AI for advice. They land on your site with a specific question in mind, and they need social proof immediately. Ensure your top 3 reviews are visible above the fold, add a 'frequently asked by AI shoppers' section on your product page, and run a retargeting campaign to ChatGPT referrers. The AI sent them; your reviews and clarity close them.
WatchWatch for product recommendation tools to integrate AI-sourced questions directly into PDPs to close the discovery-to-purchase gap.

Retail chains redesign customer experience via seasonal refresh, AI policy tightening, and store concepts

Per Retail Dive, Macy's revamped Santaland and brought back Holiday Square, Bath & Body Works introduced a new 'feel-good' store concept, and Etsy tightened AI use policies to emphasize craftsmanship — all moves to differentiate retail environments as digital pressure mounts.

ReadingThe steal: if you sell through retail or direct-to-consumer, redesign the experience before you redesign the product. Macy's did not launch new holiday products — it launched a new holiday environment. For a brand selling through your own site: audit your product page like you would audit a physical store. Is the visual clear? Can a shopper stand in front of it for 60 seconds without leaving? Redesign the 'store experience' (layout, photography, trust signals) every quarter. Ignore product churn for 90 days and focus only on how a first-time buyer moves through your site. The sale happens in the environment, not the sku.
WatchWatch for more retailers to launch limited-edition store concepts in test markets rather than full-chain rollouts.

Marketers express revenue optimism for 2026 holiday despite economic pressure, per Modern Retail+ Research

Per Modern Retail+ Research, marketers' holiday revenue expectations for 2026 have shifted to optimism after conservative forecasts in 2025, signaling growing confidence in consumer demand despite ongoing economic headwinds.

ReadingThe steal: confidence is contagious. If broader sentiment is shifting positive, move your holiday timeline forward by two weeks and test demand early (September instead of October). Brands that forecast optimism but launch late miss the early-buyer segment that forms the ceiling for the entire season. Run a small pre-holiday push in week one of September targeting last year's repeat buyers. Their behavior will signal whether the broader optimism is real or just sentiment.
WatchWatch for Q3 2026 earnings reports to confirm or refute this optimism signal with actual early-season sales data.
