The Website You Never Think About Was Open Before Breakfast

PHP is the engine under 69% of the websites whose language is known, which means it is under the website in your company you have not thought about in a year: a dealer portal, a company store, the system that sends your email. The flaw had been in it for more than a decade. Researchers working with AI found it in August. The disclosure broke on Monday night, the attacks began before dawn Tuesday, and the patch landed at 10 a.m. Eastern while governments in Europe took their own websites down to wait for it. No company has reported a breach yet, and that is not the comfort it sounds like: the week between "nothing reported" and "the first one reported" is the week the checking happens. If your site is built on a platform that does not run PHP, this does not touch it. If a vendor's does, it may already have. One email, sent today, tells you within the hour which is which.

Walmart pitches brand lift studies directly to CPG as holiday ad spend tightens

Per Modern Retail, Walmart's sales team is directly approaching brand clients with on-site brand lift studies ahead of the holiday shopping season, offering proof of performance before media commitments.

ReadingThe steal: before your next retail media buy, ask for lift data from this season's early adopters, not from the vendor's standard deck. Walmart is offering proof you can cite to justify spend to finance. Request a case study from a competitor's category—if they ran lift studies on similar products this season, their numbers become your negotiating floor. This converts the retailer from a black box to a documented return.
MY STASH TAKEWalmart figured out that brands are drowning in media options and spooked by ROI claims. So instead of selling ad slots, they're selling proof. The smart move is to ask which brands already ran lift studies in your category on Walmart Connect—their data becomes your baseline. You walk in with third-party validation before you spend a dollar.
WatchWatch whether Target and Amazon follow with similar outreach programs or if lift studies become table-stakes for any retailer claiming performance credibility.

Omnicom wins Coca-Cola's North American media account as holdco consolidation tightens

Per Digiday and Marketing Dive, Omnicom secured Coca-Cola's US and Canada media business, with CEO John Wren pitching a bespoke team model rather than reassigning existing accounts. WPP retained Coca-Cola's global remit.

ReadingThe steal: when you're evaluating an agency partner for a major spend, ask them to commit to a dedicated team structure, not a shared-services model. Request org charts showing who owns what function, and require them to name individuals, not departments. Omnicom won by promising custom, not default.
MY STASH TAKEThe holding company game is breaking apart. Coca-Cola didn't want the agency equivalent of a hand-me-down sweater—they wanted bespoke. If you're a brand evaluating new agency relationships, this is your model: ask for dedicated names, not generalist pools. The agencies smart enough to say 'yes, we'll staff this team full-time for you' are the ones winning now.
WatchWatch whether other major brands follow Coca-Cola and demand bespoke team commitments, raising the cost of entry for agencies across the holdco ecosystem.

Bath & Body Works debuts new store concept tied to emotional wellness positioning

Per Retail Dive, Bath & Body Works introduced a new store concept aligned with a 'feel good' brand positioning, redesigning the physical retail footprint.

ReadingThe steal: if you sell scent, skincare, or wellness-adjacent products, the store layout and lighting are not decoration—they're part of the product pitch. Map out which categories get corner positioning (high traffic), which get soft lighting (relaxation cues), and which get sample stations (trial conversion). Every square foot is a choice; make it intentional.
MY STASH TAKEBath & Body Works is betting that the store experience itself is the differentiator now. Not the products, not the price—the feeling you get walking in. For physical product brands opening retail, this is the move: design the space around the emotional benefit, not the shelf count. Your store layout is your brand story printed on the floor.
WatchMonitor whether Bath & Body Works tests subscription or membership incentives tied to store visits in the new concept locations.

Etsy tightens AI policies to defend craftsmanship positioning as creator liability rises

Per Retail Dive, Etsy updated its AI use policies to emphasize craftsmanship, protecting the platform's core value proposition as AI-generated product pressure increases.

ReadingThe steal: if your product relies on perceived authenticity, craftsmanship, or human touch, encode that into your terms. Don't just assert it in copy—make it a verifiable rule. Require suppliers to certify hand-finishing steps, take photos of the process, or sign a maker oath. Transparency becomes your competitive moat.
MY STASH TAKEEtsy figured out that in a world flooded with AI-assisted products, 'actually made by a person' is a category advantage worth protecting with rules, not just talk. If you're in the maker, artisan, or craft space, copy this: publish your standards, require proof, and make it part of your seller onboarding. The policy is the story.
WatchWatch for competing platforms (Shopify, others) to launch similar artisan certification programs or AI-disclosure requirements.

e.l.f. deploys Y2K nostalgia campaign targeting Gen Z makeup buyers via cultural memory

Per Marketing Dive, e.l.f. ran a campaign casting Y2K nostalgia to deliver cultural resonance with Gen Z, demonstrating that Gen Z responds to specific era nostalgia, not just current trends.

ReadingThe steal: identify a cultural era your buyer's parents or older siblings lived through but your target knows only through social feeds. Name it explicitly in your campaign. Reference the artifacts (low-rise jeans, butterfly clips, thin eyebrows, glossy lips) but frame them as ironic choices, not throwbacks. Gen Z wants to choose the past, not inherit it.
MY STASH TAKEe.l.f. understood that Gen Z doesn't want 'retro'—they want irony and control. By positioning Y2K as a choice, not a trend cycle, they gave their audience permission to buy into aesthetics their parents actually wore, but through a lens of owned nostalgia. If you're selling to Gen Z, find the era your older millennials lived through, name it, and let Gen Z rebrand it as theirs.
WatchWatch whether e.l.f. expands the nostalgia play to other decades or eras, or doubles down on Y2K across seasonal drops.

Adults drove $13.5 billion in Halloween spending as 'Adultoween' reshapes seasonal retail

Per Modern Retail, adults are fueling $13.5 billion in Halloween spending through growth in home decor, food and beverage, and costume spending—establishing 'Adultoween' as a distinct spending category.

ReadingThe steal: if you sell seasonal home goods, food, beverage, or entertaining products, test a 'Halloween for adults' positioning instead of family-focused messaging. Price products 20-30% higher when positioned as adult entertaining (premium cocktail mixers, luxury table décor, designer costumes) versus family bulk SKUs. The same product repositioned sells at a different margin.
MY STASH TAKERetailers noticed that adults spend more aggressively on seasons than kids do, so they're building entire Halloween subcategories around adult entertaining, wine pairings, and home ambiance. If you're in seasonal product, your October play isn't 'families'—it's 'adults throwing parties.' That positioning shift alone moves your price floor up.
WatchWatch whether other seasonal holidays (Valentine's, Easter, Christmas) see similar adult-focused subcategory development and premium pricing strategies.

Monster Energy and Call of Duty co-hosted immersive launch event at Cosm Los Angeles

Per PR Newswire, Monster Energy and Call of Duty took over Cosm Los Angeles for an immersive Modern Warfare 4 launch celebration featuring celebrities, athletes, and creators in a gaming-entertainment hybrid environment.

ReadingThe steal: when a major gaming or entertainment property launches, offer to host the creator night or launch party. Provide the beverage, control the experience, and position your brand as the fuel of the moment. The event becomes owned content—every creator who attends generates uncompensated social coverage.
MY STASH TAKEMonster understood that launch moments are cultural flashpoints—creators and athletes converge, phones come out, and whoever controls the venue controls the narrative. By hosting the Cosm event, Monster inserted itself as the official drink of Modern Warfare's moment. This is the inverse of sponsorship: instead of buying ad space, you own the venue.
WatchMonitor whether Monster extends this to other gaming launches or expands the Cosm partnership to other franchises.
