The Website You Never Think About Was Open Before Breakfast

PHP is the engine under 69% of the websites whose language is known, which means it is under the website in your company you have not thought about in a year: a dealer portal, a company store, the system that sends your email. The flaw had been in it for more than a decade. Researchers working with AI found it in August. The disclosure broke on Monday night, the attacks began before dawn Tuesday, and the patch landed at 10 a.m. Eastern while governments in Europe took their own websites down to wait for it. No company has reported a breach yet, and that is not the comfort it sounds like: the week between "nothing reported" and "the first one reported" is the week the checking happens. If your site is built on a platform that does not run PHP, this does not touch it. If a vendor's does, it may already have. One email, sent today, tells you within the hour which is which.

SharkNinja paid fans 15% commission to sell beauty ahead of holidays

Per Glossy, SharkNinja turned customers and employees into beauty sellers by offering 15% commissions and embedding them into holiday gift-guide challenges ahead of the 2026 season.

ReadingThe steal: commission-based sellers cost zero upfront and scale only on sell-through. A 15% cut is below traditional influencer rates but high enough to move the needle for a customer looking to offset a gift purchase. The play: open a tiered commission structure to your email list and SMS base — those are your warmest buyers — and seed gift-guide challenges with your top tier first. Measure not the influencer rate but the repeat-order velocity of sellers vs. non-sellers.
MY STASH TAKEMost brands still hire external creators and pray they convert. SharkNinja did the reverse: paid the people who already loved the product to prove it. That's not influencer strategy, that's sales infrastructure. The genius is hiding in plain math — a customer who sells to five friends is now accountable for six SKUs, not one. And they're not performing for a camera; they're moving product because the margin is worth their time. This is how you scale without a creator budget.
WatchWatch for SharkNinja to layer a tiered rewards structure — higher commissions for sellers who hit volume milestones — turning top performers into exclusive brand ambassadors.

Nordstrom placement signaled $1.5M seed round for bootstrapped apparel brand

Per Entrepreneur, holiCHIC bootstrapped to seven figures, then used a Nordstrom placement as proof of concept to raise $1.5 million in seed funding in May 2026.

ReadingThe steal: wholesale placement is currency with institutional capital. Before you pitch a fund, land a placement with a national retailer — one that a VC can verify by walking into a store or checking the buyer's manifest. A single Nordstrom buy-in is worth more in a pitch deck than three years of email revenue numbers. The play: close your first wholesale deal before your first investor call. Talk to a regional department store or specialty buyer first, ship product, let them sell, then approach VCs with the order sheet as proof.
MY STASH TAKEMost founders pitch angels on a dream and a spreadsheet. holiCHIC pitched on a Nordstrom receipt. That's the difference between 'we think this will sell' and 'a professional buyer already bought it and put it on the floor.' Nordstrom did the due diligence for the fund. The placement cost capital, but it was worth every dollar — it became the anchor that moved a $1.5M check. The unglamorous truth: the retail win was harder than the fundraise. The glamorous part: once you have it, capital follows.
WatchWatch for holiCHIC to double down on wholesale and open new department store chains before the next round.

QVC stitched TikTok shows to TV into one flywheel for its 40th holiday season

Per Modern Retail, QVC built a flywheel across TikTok and TV ahead of the 2026 holidays, featuring 'mega lives' and exclusive products that connect streaming to broadcast.

ReadingThe steal: the flywheel is not the channel — it is the sequencing. A TikTok live with 5K concurrent viewers does not compete with QVC's broadcast reach. It primes it. Run a short-form live on TikTok with a subset of your audience, build urgency, then cross-promote the full 30-minute TV segment as the 'director's cut.' Measure not views, but the lift in TV tune-in during the hour after a TikTok drop. The play: every major product launch gets a TikTok teaser three days before the broadcast feature, and a unique code for TikTok viewers to use during the TV show.
MY STASH TAKEMost brands still think of TikTok and TV as competing. QVC sees them as two acts of the same show. TikTok is the preview; TV is the main event. The preview drives the main event's ratings. The main event validates the preview. That's a flywheel, not a channel strategy. And it matters for any brand with holiday deadlines and product volume — you're not trying to go viral on TikTok, you're trying to convert TikTok viewers into TV watchers who are primed and ready to buy.
WatchWatch for QVC to test exclusive TikTok-only drop windows — limited quantities live on TikTok only, driving FOMO back to the TV broadcast.

Bath & Body Works enlisted Zooey Deschanel to anchor holiday gifting in a crowded market

Per Glossy, Bath & Body Works is leaning on Zooey Deschanel as a flagship talent to drive holiday season sales amid increased competition in fragrance and body care.

ReadingThe steal: in crowded categories, talent becomes category difference. A celebrity does not change your formula; she changes how a buyer feels when she picks your product off the shelf or clicks your site. The play: identify one talent who matches your buyer's identity, not just your product aesthetic. Then anchor every holiday creative — email, social, retail signage — to that one face and voice. Do not rotate. Repetition builds recall, and recall converts in December.
MY STASH TAKEBody care is a brutally crowded space. Bath & Body Works could have done what everyone else does — discounts, limited editions, 'holiday scents.' Instead they hired a talent whose entire brand is about feeling good and doing your own thing. That's not a campaign; it's an insurance policy against commodity death. When a shopper sees Zooey holding a fragrance, she does not think 'lotion.' She thinks 'that's the kind of person I want to be.' That's the work a celebrity does that a product alone cannot.
WatchWatch for Bath & Body Works to extend the Zooey partnership into 2027 and test limited co-created scents bearing her name.

Etsy tightened AI use policies to protect handmade credential, per new rules

Per Retail Dive, Etsy updated its AI use policies to emphasize craftsmanship and differentiate the platform from mass-market resellers.

ReadingThe steal: a platform's strength is not its size, it is its exclusion. By clarifying what handmade means and enforcing it, Etsy keeps commodity producers out and keeps buyers believing in craftsmanship. The play: if you sell on Etsy, document your process — photograph your hands making the product, film short clips of ideation and production, and use those assets in your listing description and social. Buyers choosing Etsy over Amazon are buying into the belief that someone made this. Give them proof.
MY STASH TAKEMost platforms chase scale and bleed differentiation. Etsy did the opposite — they said 'we are not Amazon, and we're going to enforce that in policy.' That's a bet that buyers will pay more for the story of handmade than they will for the lowest price. And Etsy sellers win because the policy keeps factory resellers out and keeps the buyer base looking for authentic craft. If you're on Etsy, you're not competing on price. You're competing on the narrative of your hands and your time.
WatchWatch for Etsy to add a 'verified maker' badge for sellers who pass an audit of their production process.

Major Retailers (QVC, Macy's, Bath & Body Works)
Modern Retail & Retail Dive ↗

Holiday retail is shifting toward experiential in-store anchors — shows, makeovers, themed spaces

Per Modern Retail and Retail Dive, major retailers are adding experiential elements for the 2026 holiday — QVC's mega lives, Macy's revamped Santaland, and Bath & Body Works' new store concept — to drive foot traffic and dwell time.

ReadingThe steal: the store is your event space. If you have a physical location or a pop-up window, build one experiential anchor — a live demo, a makeover station, a photo-worthy installation — that is not available online. It does not need to be huge; it needs to be worth the trip. The play: plan one experiential hook for your holiday season. Announce it in October, build FOMO around it, and measure success not by sales in that moment but by social mentions and foot traffic uplift. Capture emails from visitors and retarget them with online offers post-season.
MY STASH TAKEThe stores that are winning are not winning on selection or price. They're winning on 'you have to come see this.' Macy's Santaland is not about buying ornaments; it's about taking a photo your kids will remember. QVC's mega lives are not about watching a demo; they're about being part of a broadcast event. Bath & Body Works' new concept is not about buying more lotion; it's about feeling like you're inside their brand. That's the shift. Retail is becoming theater, not just a checkout.
WatchWatch for smaller retailers to test pop-up experience bars — a station where a customer can customize, demo, or co-create during the visit.

Adults are driving $13.5 billion in Halloween spending, per emerging seasonal trend

Per Modern Retail, adults are fueling $13.5 billion in Halloween spending, with home decor, food, and beverage categories growing as 'Adultoween' becomes a seasonal driver.

ReadingThe steal: an aging demo often means an upsell. If your product touches Halloween (candles, spirits, decor, snacks), test a 'luxury' or 'premium' line aimed at adults 30-50 who are hosting parties or decorating homes. Price it 20-30% higher than the baseline. The play: this week, audit your product and create a 'for adults' positioning variation — different copy, different imagery, different price point — and test it in paid social targeting 35-54 year-old homeowners. Measure AOV and repeat rate against your current baseline.
MY STASH TAKEHalloween was always a kids' holiday. Now it's an adult spending event. That's not a trend; it's a demographic shift. Adults have disposable income and are hosting. Kids get cheaper costumes; adults get better parties. If you make anything seasonal, do not ignore this. Test a premium line aimed at the demographic that has money and is already looking. The beauty is they're looking — you just need to show them a product that matches their aesthetic and their wallet.
WatchWatch for spirits and beverage brands to create Halloween-exclusive releases aimed at 35+ demographic, priced at premium tiers.
