Jay Norman launches Verse + Hook with $3M seed, positions for Black-culture ad network

Former Spotify exec builds platform around cultural-economy thesis as agencies reallocate $2B+ in multicultural budgets.

Jay Norman, who spent six years at Spotify building artist partnerships and cultural programming, launched Verse + Hook in December with $3 million in seed funding from Initialized Capital and a group of entertainment-industry angels. The media platform operates on a single thesis: Black culture defines popular culture, and advertisers pay premium rates to reach tastemakers before trends cross over.

Verse + Hook currently produces editorial content, video series, and cultural-commentary newsletters targeting what Norman calls "culture professionals"—stylists, A&R executives, brand strategists, DJs—rather than mass consumers. The company runs no advertising yet. Norman declined to specify revenue targets but confirmed the platform will launch an ad network in Q2 2025, offering brands direct access to an audience segment agencies now value at 15-22% CPM premiums over general-market inventory.

The timing reflects a structural shift in how global brands allocate multicultural budgets. P&G redirected $400 million toward Black-owned media properties in 2023. Unilever followed with $300 million. GroupM's 2024 intelligence report showed 68% of Fortune 500 CMOs now classify "cultural relevance" as a top-three KPI, up from 41% in 2021. Norman spent eighteen months studying how brands like Nike and Rémy Martin staff cultural-intelligence teams before launching campaigns, then built Verse + Hook to serve as the media layer between those teams and their target audiences.

What separates this from prior Black-media plays is distribution architecture. Norman structured Verse + Hook as a platform company, not a content studio. The plan: sign 40-60 independent Black creators by mid-2025, provide them production resources and audience data, then package their combined reach into a programmatic ad network. Creators retain IP ownership. Verse + Hook takes a 20-30% revenue share on advertising sold against their content. Norman projects the network will reach 12-18 million monthly uniques by year-end, with audience composition skewing 62% Black, 38% cross-cultural.

Agencies are watching. Omnicom's cultural-strategy group already uses Verse + Hook content in client pitches, according to three people familiar with the partnership. WPP's cultural-intelligence unit tracks Norman's hiring, particularly his December addition of a former Pinterest partnerships lead who brought relationships with 120+ mid-tier influencers. The structural question: whether a founder-led platform can scale faster than holding companies building similar infrastructure internally. WPP budgeted $80 million in 2024 for its own Black-culture media unit. Publicis committed $60 million.

Operators should track three near-term signals. First, whether Verse + Hook raises a Series A before launching ads—an indication Norman prioritizes scale over unit economics. Second, which heritage brands sign as launch advertisers for the Q2 ad network. Third, whether the platform pursues acquisition conversations with trade publishers like AdAge or Digiday, who lack cultural-vertical depth but control agency-buyer relationships.

Norman told one investor the company will be profitable within 18 months or acquired within 24. That timeline suggests he expects rapid CPM appreciation in Black-culture inventory as more brands shift budgets. It also suggests he built the cap table to support a trade sale. Initialized Capital holds 18%, per SEC filings. Norman and co-founders retain 64%. The remainder sits with strategic angels who previously sold creator platforms to Spotify, YouTube, and TikTok.

The takeaway
Norman's bet: brands will pay **15-22%** CPM premiums to reach Black tastemakers before cultural crossover, creating a **$400M+** ad-network opportunity by 2027.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
