Walmart absorbed Vibe.co into Connect, reshaping retail media's $4.7B CTV tier

The June deal closed without fanfare, handing Walmart's retail-media engine programmatic reach across 200M monthly streams.

Walmart completed its acquisition of Vibe.co, the connected-television advertising platform that extends programmatic inventory across gas stations, gyms, and convenience stores. The deal, announced in June and closed without ceremony last week, folds Vibe into Walmart Connect, the retailer's $3.4B annual advertising division. Vibe reaches 200M monthly streams through 115,000 screens in non-traditional out-of-home environments, giving Walmart's retail-media platform programmatic scale beyond its owned properties and Roku partnership.

The transaction gives Walmart Connect two things retail media has struggled to deliver at scale: programmatic CTV inventory outside the home, and attribution loops that track ad exposure to in-store purchase. Vibe's footprint spans 29 retail chains, including 7-Eleven and Chevron stations, where dwell time is short but purchase intent is immediate. Walmart declined to disclose the purchase price. Vibe raised $22M across three rounds, most recently a $13M Series A in August led by Arthur Ventures. The company was profitable on an operating basis as of Q2, according to filings reviewed by Voyage Edge.

The acquisition matters because retail media's $129B global spend is consolidating around platforms that can close the loop between ad impression and SKU-level sales data. Walmart Connect already operates the second-largest retail-media network in the U.S. after Amazon, generating $3.4B in advertising revenue in fiscal 2024, up 26% year-over-year. The addition of Vibe's programmatic CTV inventory extends Walmart's addressable impression base beyond its owned properties—Walmart.com, the Walmart app, and in-store screens—into environments where competitors cannot match attribution fidelity. Albertsons, Kroger, and Target operate similar CTV plays, but none control 200M monthly streams in third-party retail environments with SKU-level purchase data.

The timing is deliberate. Retail media is entering a margin-compression cycle as CPMs fall and advertisers demand tighter attribution. Walmart Connect's operating margin sits near 60%, according to analysts at Jefferies, because the network monetizes existing customer traffic without incremental acquisition cost. Vibe extends that margin structure into out-of-home environments where Walmart has no physical presence but can still match ad exposure to purchase behavior through loyalty data. The platform will remain operationally independent under Walmart Connect's umbrella, continuing to serve non-Walmart retail clients while prioritizing inventory allocation for Walmart's CPG partners.

Operators should watch three follow-on moves. First, whether Walmart integrates Vibe's programmatic stack into its existing demand-side platform, which would allow CPG brands to buy Walmart.com display, in-store audio, and out-of-home CTV through a single interface. That integration, if executed, would likely surface in Q2 earnings commentary. Second, whether Vibe's gas-station and convenience-store footprint expands into Walmart's own fuel centers, which operate at over 2,000 U.S. locations. Third, whether Walmart begins packaging Vibe inventory into upfront commitments with its top 200 CPG advertisers, a shift that would signal the retailer views out-of-home CTV as a core product rather than an experimental add-on.

The deal closed as Kroger waits for FTC clearance on its $24.6B Albertsons acquisition, a transaction that would create a retail-media network matching Walmart's scale. Vibe's absorption into Walmart Connect moves 115,000 screens out of the open market and into a walled garden where attribution runs through a single retailer's purchase data.

The takeaway
Walmart's Vibe.co acquisition moves **200M** monthly CTV streams into a closed attribution loop, forcing CPG brands to buy through Walmart or lose out-of-home reach.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
