Walmart Closes Vibe.co Acquisition, Absorbs $100M+ CTV Platform Into Retail Media Stack

Walmart completed its acquisition of Vibe.co and folded the connected TV ad platform into Walmart Connect, seven months after announcing the deal in June. The transaction value was not disclosed, though private-market data providers estimated Vibe.co's pre-deal valuation at $120M based on its 2023 revenue run rate of $22M.

Vibe.co operated a programmatic CTV platform that placed ads on screens inside gyms, retail waiting areas, and quick-service restaurants. Walmart now controls that distribution footprint—roughly 200,000 screens across 42 U.S. metro areas—and has begun routing inventory through Walmart Connect's existing demand-side interface. CPG brands already spending on Walmart's platform can now extend campaigns to out-of-home CTV environments without negotiating separate insertion orders. The integration went live in mid-March for select advertisers in the grocery, beverage, and personal-care verticals.

The move matters because it gives Walmart a distributed ad surface beyond its own properties. Retail media networks have historically been confined to owned-and-operated real estate: a retailer's website, app, and in-store displays. Vibe.co's infrastructure lets Walmart monetize attention in third-party locations where shoppers are present but not actively transacting. That shifts the retailer's ad business from a conversion vehicle to an awareness layer, directly competing with linear TV and out-of-home buys that luxury and consumer brands allocate separately. Walmart Connect reported $3.4B in ad revenue for fiscal 2024, up 26% year-over-year. Adding Vibe.co's screen inventory positions the division to chase the $27B U.S. out-of-home ad market, where growth has stalled at 3% annually since 2022.

For allocators, the second-order effect is margin pressure on traditional OOH networks. If Walmart can offer comparable reach at lower CPMs—possible because it already subsidizes Connect infrastructure with retail margin—independent CTV networks will need to cut rates or pivot to premium placements where brand safety commands higher pricing. Luxury hospitality and automotive advertisers, who rely on OOH for high-net-worth targeting, may see better inventory availability as mid-market CPG budgets migrate to Walmart's stack. That rebalances supply in the $12B premium OOH segment, which has been capacity-constrained since Q3 2023.

Operators should watch for Walmart's first public disclosure of Vibe.co's contribution to Connect revenue, likely in the Q1 2026 earnings call scheduled for mid-May. Programmatic fill rates on the acquired inventory will signal whether third-party demand exists at scale or if Walmart is backfilling unsold impressions with house ads. Also watch whether Walmart extends Vibe.co's platform to international markets, particularly Mexico and Canada, where the retailer operates 4,600+ stores but has no comparable CTV offering. Any cross-border rollout would pressure Publicis Groupe and Omnicom, both of which are building retail media divisions for multinational clients.

Walmart Connect is now the fourth-largest digital ad platform in the U.S. by revenue, behind Google, Meta, and Amazon. The Vibe.co acquisition adds a channel where Amazon has no comparable asset, though Amazon has been testing ads on third-party smart TVs since Q4 2024. Walmart filed 12 ad-tech patents in the past 18 months, half focused on location-based attribution. The retailer is engineering attention infrastructure, not just selling shelf space.

The takeaway
Walmart absorbed **200,000** CTV screens via Vibe.co, giving CPG brands programmatic out-of-home reach and pressuring traditional OOH networks on price.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
