Walmart Connect closes Vibe.co acquisition, owns CTV stack end-to-end

Walmart finalized its acquisition of Vibe.co on Monday, bringing the television advertising platform inside Walmart Connect and completing a vertical integration play first announced in June. The retail giant now controls connected TV ad infrastructure from creative execution through measurement, eliminating third-party margin leakage across its $3.4 billion annual retail media business.

Vibe.co operated as a self-service CTV platform serving approximately 40,000 retail locations and 1 million commercial screens before the transaction. Walmart Connect, which ranked as the third-largest retail media network in the United States by revenue in 2024, had previously relied on programmatic partnerships and direct publisher relationships to deliver video advertising for consumer packaged goods brands. The acquisition transfers Vibe.co's technology stack, advertiser relationships, and screen inventory directly onto Walmart's balance sheet.

The timing matters because retail media networks face margin compression as major advertisers increasingly demand performance attribution tied to point-of-sale data rather than impression delivery. Owning the CTV layer allows Walmart Connect to match household-level purchase behavior with streaming ad exposure without sharing transaction-level data with intermediaries. Target and Amazon already control similar closed-loop measurement systems. Kroger operates Kroger Precision Marketing with 84.51° providing first-party data infrastructure. Walmart was the last top-tier grocery retailer still dependent on outside CTV vendors for closed-loop attribution at scale.

For agency holding companies and independent trading desks, the move compresses available inventory outside walled gardens. Vibe.co previously sold CTV impressions through programmatic exchanges accessible to any demand-side platform. Post-acquisition, that inventory now requires direct Walmart Connect API integration and adherence to Walmart's data clean room protocols. Dentsu, Publicis, and WPP each negotiated preferred partner agreements with Walmart Connect between August and November, securing early API access in exchange for minimum spend commitments rumored to exceed $50 million annually per holding company.

Watch whether Walmart Connect begins offering CTV inventory to non-endemic advertisers—brands without products in Walmart stores—within the next 90 days. Vibe.co served automotive, insurance, and pharmaceutical clients before the acquisition. If Walmart retains those categories, it signals intent to compete with Roku and Samsung for general advertising budgets rather than limiting CTV to trade marketing. Also watch Walmart's Q1 2025 earnings commentary in mid-May for disclosure on Walmart Connect's take rate, which analysts estimate between 12% and 15% of gross media spend. Any compression below 12% would indicate Walmart is subsidizing CTV to gain share.

The cleaner play was always ownership. Walmart Connect now operates the only retail media network with native in-store, e-commerce, and CTV distribution under single-source attribution, no reseller fees.

The takeaway
Walmart Connect owns CTV infrastructure end-to-end, eliminating programmatic leakage and forcing agencies into direct API partnerships with minimum spend floors.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
