Wendy's announced Tariq Hassan as its new chief creative officer, effective immediately, assigning him oversight of brand positioning, creative strategy, and advertising execution across 6,300 global locations. The appointment arrives as the Dublin, Ohio-based chain enters the third year of stagnant same-store sales growth and declining premium-tier trial rates among consumers aged 25-44.
Hassan joins from Tombras, where he led the agency's creative practice for four years, working on regional hospitality accounts and select consumer packaged goods brands. Before Tombras, he spent seven years at Goodby Silverstein & Partners, most recently as executive creative director on the Adobe and Comcast portfolios. Wendy's did not disclose whether the role reports directly to CEO Kirk Tanner or sits under the existing marketing structure led by CMO Carl Loredo, who joined in 2022 from PepsiCo.
The move addresses a specific problem: Wendy's has cycled through three creative agencies since 2020, shifting from VMLY&R to Publicis then to VML without establishing a coherent brand voice or visual system. During that period, same-store sales growth averaged 1.2 percent annually, well below McDonald's 3.8 percent and behind Burger King's 2.1 percent. Premium product launches—including the $7.99 Pretzel Bacon Pub and the $8.49 Big Bacon Cheddar Angus—underperformed projections by 18 percent and 22 percent, respectively. The company's Q4 2024 earnings call cited "creative inconsistency" as a headwind to traffic recovery.
For luxury hospitality and heritage brands watching the quick-service segment, the Hassan hire signals a broader shift: operators are pulling creative direction in-house rather than delegating to agencies on retainer. Wendy's now joins Chipotle, Shake Shack, and Sweetgreen in maintaining a senior creative executive inside the organization, a structure that allows faster iteration on menu messaging and tighter control over partnership activations. This matters because the next 18 months will see Wendy's pilot 400 remodeled locations with elevated interior finishes and expanded beverage programs, requiring marketing language that justifies higher check averages without alienating core customers.
Allocators should track three near-term events. First, Wendy's will likely announce a lead creative agency of record by late Q2 2025, now that Hassan can brief and select partners under his own mandate. Second, expect a reformulated value menu in Q3 2025, positioned to compete directly with McDonald's $5 Meal Deal while maintaining margin structure. Third, watch for Hassan's first national campaign launch in Q4 2025 or Q1 2026—the first real test of whether internal creative leadership can reverse trial-rate decline in premium dayparts.
The 2027 brand overhaul referenced in internal planning documents hinges on whether Hassan can establish creative continuity long enough to shift consumer perception. Wendy's has 24 months to prove the thesis.
