LSU Blocks Two Ex-NFL Players From Roster After NCAA Eligibility Fight Escalates

Defensive end Jalen Wright and cornerback Daylon Harris removed before litigation forced the conference's hand.

LSU announced it will not roster former NFL defensive end Jalen Wright and cornerback Daylon Harris, ending a brief experiment in fielding players with professional experience. The decision follows escalating litigation over their NCAA eligibility status, which threatened to pull the Southeastern Conference into protracted legal proceedings.

Wright spent time on NFL practice squads. Harris logged one season in the league before entering the transfer portal. Both arrived at LSU in January under the assumption that prior professional contracts had been sufficiently unwound. The NCAA's interpretation disagreed. LSU's compliance office flagged the issue 12 days before spring practice, forcing athletic director Scott Woodward to choose between a roster gamble and a clean break. He chose the latter.

The reversal matters because it exposes how shallow the guardrails remain around college rosters in the NIL era. Wright and Harris were not recruited through back channels. They disclosed their NFL history. LSU's legal team reviewed their cases. The school still miscalculated, and the correction required removing two bodies from a depth chart already thin at cornerback. Defensive coordinator Blake Baker now enters spring ball without the veteran secondary help he expected. The secondary coach, Corey Raymond, has 48 hours to redistribute reps before the first full-contact session.

For programs watching from the outside, the lesson is procedural. If a player has signed an NFL standard contract, even a practice-squad deal, the path back to college eligibility requires more than a release letter. It requires coordination with the NCAA's reinstatement office, conference counsel, and the school's general counsel. LSU appears to have skipped at least one of those steps. The litigation Wright and Harris threatened to pursue—details remain sealed—likely centered on whether the school made promises it could not deliver. Woodward's statement referenced "further review" without naming who conducted it or when.

The SEC office has not commented, but three people familiar with conference protocols said LSU's reversal likely kept the league from having to file a formal eligibility waiver request on behalf of two players whose professional status was not in dispute. That would have set a precedent the conference did not want. Wright and Harris are now free to transfer again. One SEC West program has already reached out, according to a person close to Harris's representation.

The Tigers open spring practice April 7. Woodward has two coordinator hires pending and a looming sponsorship renewal with Raising Cane's, which expires in June. Whether the Wright-Harris situation affects either is unclear, but the optics of a public eligibility retreat do not help when presenting the program to a sponsor evaluating its next check. The litigation, if it continues, will surface in discovery filings within 90 days.

The takeaway
LSU's eligibility miscalculation cost two veteran bodies and exposed how thin the NIL-era rulebook remains for ex-NFL players returning to college rosters.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
