Amazon Hit $19.8B in Q2 Ads by Selling Against Sports It Doesn't Own

Live sports rights turned Prime Video into an ad inventory machine for physical products.

Amazon's advertising business brought in $19.8 billion in Q2 2024, according to Marketing Dive, with live sports rights playing a material role in the growth. The company bought Thursday Night Football, select MLB games, and other live broadcasts not to sell jerseys but to create premium ad inventory where physical-product brands pay more for attention that doesn't skip.

The mechanic is straightforward. Amazon secured exclusive streaming rights to events with built-in audiences, then opened ad slots during broadcasts to brands selling on its platform and off. A shampoo brand or a luggage maker can now buy a 30-second spot during a live NFL game on Prime Video, placing product in front of viewers who came for the game and stayed through the break because live sports don't let you fast-forward. The ad revenue compounds: Amazon charges the brand for the impression, and if the viewer converts on-platform, Amazon takes a cut of the sale. The sports rights cost billions upfront, but the ad inventory they generate pays back across quarters.

Why this worked: Live sports are one of the last formats that hold viewers through commercial breaks. Streaming services trained audiences to expect ad-free or skip-friendly content. Sports broke that pattern. According to Nielsen data cited in trade coverage, live sports account for 95 of the top 100 most-watched broadcasts in the U.S., and viewers accept ads as the price of real-time access. Amazon didn't need to change viewer behavior; it bought into a format that already commanded attention and tolerance for interruption. The sports rights gave Amazon ad slots that cost more per thousand impressions than standard display or video because the audience is verified, engaged, and harder to replicate elsewhere.

The second mechanic: Amazon used sports to pull brand budgets that traditionally went to linear TV. A CPG brand or a direct-to-consumer luggage company that once bought spots on CBS or NBC during prime time can now buy against the same game on Prime Video, with the added benefit of immediate attribution. If a viewer sees the ad and buys the product on Amazon within a day, the brand knows the spot worked. That closed-loop attribution makes the sports inventory more defensible at higher rates.

The steal for a small physical-product brand: You don't need sports rights, but you can apply the same logic to any content your audience won't skip. First, identify where your customer consumes live or time-sensitive content — a niche podcast, a weekly livestream, a local event feed. Reach out to the creator or platform and buy a 60-second live read or mid-roll spot during the broadcast. Budget: $200 to $2,000 depending on audience size. The key is live or near-live; recorded content gets skipped. Second, script the ad as a direct offer tied to the moment. Not brand storytelling — a specific product, a code, a deadline. "Use code THURSDAY at checkout, ends tonight." That urgency mimics the sports dynamic: the viewer is there now, the offer is now, the friction to skip is higher than a standard pre-roll. Third, track the code or link to measure return. If the cost per acquisition beats your other channels, scale the spend and lock in recurring spots. If the creator has a regular schedule, negotiate a season rate at a discount and own that slot for 8-12 weeks.

For larger operators with budget: Test buying ad inventory on streaming platforms that carry live events but aren't Amazon. Peacock, Paramount+, and ESPN+ all sell ad slots during live sports at lower rates than Amazon because their attribution stack is weaker. Buy a small test flight — $5,000 to $10,000 — during a mid-tier game, use a unique landing page or code, and measure conversion within 24 hours. If the cost per order is within range, scale up and negotiate volume discounts for a multi-game package. The data you gather becomes your proof to internal finance that streaming sports inventory converts.

The broader pattern: Content that demands real-time attention creates ad inventory that commands higher rates and better performance. Amazon bought sports because it's the clearest example of that principle. A physical-product brand can borrow the same logic wherever its audience gathers live, from a Discord AMA to a Twitch stream to a local radio show during drive time. The format changes; the mechanism holds.

The takeaway
Live content holds attention through ad breaks; buy slots where your audience won't skip, and script for immediate action.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
