Anthropologie added Nike and sneaker visits jumped nearly 30% year-over-year

A premium lifestyle retailer proved you can add mass-market product without diluting brand, if you read the customer signal first.

Anthropologie launched Nike sneakers in stores and online, and foot traffic to the sneaker category increased nearly 30% year-over-year, according to Glossy. Jessica Irick Peek, general merchandise manager of footwear and accessories for Anthropologie, confirmed the figure represents customers coming to Anthropologie specifically for sneakers over the past twelve months.

The move defied conventional category logic. Anthropologie built its brand on bohemian dresses, artisan home goods, and premium price points. Nike is ubiquitous, sold everywhere from Foot Locker to Dick's Sporting Goods. Yet Anthropologie read a latent customer behavior — women already shopping the brand were looking for sneakers that fit their aesthetic — and answered with the most recognized athletic brand in the world. The retailer did not launch an exclusive capsule or a co-branded line. It brought in standard Nike product and let the existing customer base find it.

The mechanism is demand validation before inventory commitment. Anthropologie observed sneaker traffic rising inside its own four walls before the Nike partnership. Customers were browsing footwear, presumably looking for comfortable, casual options that worked with the brand's apparel. The retailer responded by introducing a category leader rather than testing an unknown brand or building a private label. This reduced the education burden and compressed the purchase decision. A customer who might have hesitated on a no-name sneaker brand bought Nike because the brand equity was already established. Anthropologie provided the curation; Nike provided the trust.

The lesson for a smaller brand is to watch where your customers slow down or ask questions. If you sell apparel and customers ask where to find matching shoes, that is an entry signal. If you sell home goods and people request coordinating textiles, same principle. The play is to add a complementary product category that your customer already buys elsewhere, using a brand or supplier they already trust. You do not need to manufacture it yourself. You need to source it, present it in your context, and let the existing relationship do the conversion work.

A solo founder running a Shopify store can execute this in three steps. First, survey your last fifty customers or review support tickets for product requests that fall outside your current catalog. Second, identify a supplier or wholesale partner that sells the requested category at a price point your customer already accepts. Use Faire, Shopify Collective, or direct outreach to established brands in that category. Third, list a curated selection — three to five SKUs — on your site with the same styling and photography language you use for your core products. Set a thirty-day test window and track conversion rate, average order value, and repeat purchase rate. If AOV climbs or repeat rate holds, expand the assortment. If neither moves, pull the category and test another request.

The broader pattern is category expansion as a retention tool, not an acquisition lever. Anthropologie did not use Nike to bring in new customers unfamiliar with the brand. It used Nike to capture more wallet share from customers already walking the aisles. The 30% increase in sneaker visits reflects existing customers returning more frequently because the store now solves an additional need. For a small brand, that means the highest-return product expansion is the one your current customer is already buying from someone else.

The takeaway
Add a complementary category your customers already buy elsewhere, source it from a trusted brand, and let existing relationships convert.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub.
