Best Buy bets retail media revenue on connected TV inventory, not search ads

Electronics retailer pivots ad-sales pitch to CTV screens, betting brand budgets follow attention shift to streaming.

Best Buy opened its annual retail media showcase Wednesday by leading with connected TV advertising slots, not the search-and-display inventory most retail media networks push first. The move signals a distribution bet: that brand advertisers shopping retail media networks now value access to streaming screens more than keyword placements on a retailer's site, according to Modern Retail.

The company positioned its CTV inventory as the core asset in its retail media network pitch to brand partners. Best Buy operates over 5,000 physical stores equipped with display screens and has direct relationships with consumers who stream content on devices purchased through the chain. That installed base of electronics buyers gives Best Buy a documented path to CTV ad impressions tied to purchase history — a data layer search ads on a product page cannot deliver.

The prioritization works because CTV inventory solves the attribution problem that has kept brand budgets out of retail media. A brand buying a Best Buy CTV ad reaches a household that recently purchased a streaming device or television through Best Buy's system, meaning the retailer holds first-party data on the hardware enabling the impression. That hardware purchase record connects to a loyalty account, which connects to subsequent category purchases. The result is a closed-loop measurement environment: a brand can buy a CTV ad, track it to a specific retail outcome, and tie spend directly to sales lift in Best Buy's own point-of-sale data.

Most retail media networks built their businesses on lower-funnel search and display ads — high-intent placements that capture shoppers already in-market. CTV ads sit higher in the funnel, typically used for awareness and consideration. By leading with CTV, Best Buy is positioning itself to capture brand budgets historically spent on traditional TV or programmatic video, not just performance marketing dollars chasing last-click conversions. The distinction matters because brand budgets are larger, less sensitive to immediate ROAS, and currently shifting from linear TV to streaming at pace. Best Buy is arguing it can deliver both the audience and the purchase proof.

The steal for a physical-product brand is to run the same closed-loop play without owning a retail media network. Identify where your customer streams content, then buy CTV inventory on that platform with a retailer-specific promo code or landing page. A candle brand sells through Target; the founder buys Roku or Hulu ads geotargeted to zip codes within 10 miles of high-performing Target locations, using a unique URL slug or QR code in the ad creative. Cost is roughly $25-$50 CPM for geotargeted CTV on self-serve platforms like StackAdapt or The Trade Desk, accessible with a $2,000 minimum monthly spend. Track the promo code redemptions in Target's system or via the landing page, then calculate cost-per-acquisition against the ad spend. If the CPA clears your margin threshold, scale the geo-targeting to more locations. If it does not, pull spend and test a different retailer or tighter geographic radius.

The pattern extends beyond retail. Any brand with a physical distribution point can layer CTV ads over those locations to prove the connection between streaming impressions and in-store outcomes. A beverage brand in Whole Foods buys CTV impressions in the 5-mile radius around its top 20 doors, runs a week-long flight, then pulls scan data from Whole Foods to measure unit velocity during the flight versus the prior week. The math either works or it does not, but the test costs less than a traditional retail promo and delivers data linear TV never could.

Best Buy's showcase sets the direction: retail media networks will compete on the quality and exclusivity of their media inventory, not just the depth of their purchase data. Brands building distribution inside those retailers should treat the media network as a lever, not a tax.

The takeaway
Layer CTV ads over your retail doors with geo-targeting and retailer-specific tracking to prove the streaming-to-store-sale loop.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
