Coke and Pepsi add QR codes to cans, turning $0.02 packaging real estate into a data collection channel

Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are rolling QR codes onto can surfaces across North America, according to MSN reporting, transforming single-serve beverage packaging into a persistent opt-in mechanism for consumer data and repeat engagement. The codes link to brand-controlled digital properties where shoppers can register for loyalty programs, unlock promotions, and consent to ongoing communication. This is not a pilot. The deployment is quiet, scaled, and operational on shelf now.

The mechanics are straightforward. A consumer scans the QR code printed directly on the can or label. The code routes to a mobile landing page where the brand offers an immediate incentive—a sweepstakes entry, a discount on the next purchase, or bonus points in a loyalty program. To claim the reward, the consumer provides an email address or phone number and opts into future marketing. The brand now owns a direct relationship with a buyer who previously existed only as an anonymous SKU sale at retail. The can becomes the enrollment card.

This works because the QR code solves the beverage industry's oldest problem: you cannot know who bought your product. Retailers own the transaction data. The brand ships pallets and receives sell-through reports, but no buyer identity. A QR code on the package bypasses the retailer's data wall. The consumer scans, the brand captures the phone number, and the relationship shifts from wholesale distribution to direct audience. The cost to add a QR code to existing label artwork is negligible—typically under $0.02 per unit at industrial print volumes. The value of a consenting mobile contact, especially one linked to a product already purchased, can exceed $5 in lifetime marketing reach, according to the Direct Marketing Association's benchmarking data.

The mechanism also enables closed-loop attribution. When a brand runs a national campaign, it can now track which consumers scanned, which redeemed an offer, and which returned for a second purchase. The QR code turns the package into a measurement device. Every scan is a known event. Every opted-in consumer becomes a reachable cohort for A/B testing, retargeting, and incrementality analysis. This is first-party data infrastructure, built on the back of packaging already in production.

A small physical-product brand can run the same play with one SKU and a roll of sticker labels. Print a QR code that links to a Typeform or a simple landing page built in Carrd or Webflow. Offer a 10% discount on the next order or entry into a monthly giveaway. Gate the offer behind an email or SMS opt-in using a tool like Klaviyo or Postscript. The cost is a $0.05 sticker per unit and $50/month for the software stack. Apply the sticker to every outbound shipment—retail, wholesale, or direct. Track the scan rate in your link shortener. If 5% of buyers scan and opt in, you have just converted 5 out of every 100 silent transactions into owned, messageable relationships. Over a year, that compounds into a list you can retarget without paying Meta or Google.

The larger pattern here is the collapse of the barrier between physical and digital customer acquisition. Beverage giants are not adding QR codes for novelty. They are adding them because the code is now the cheapest, most scalable bridge from an offline purchase to an owned digital audience. For any brand shipping a physical product, the package is no longer the end of the marketing funnel. It is the beginning of the retention loop.

The takeaway
A QR code on your package turns every sale into a potential opt-in, bypassing retail data walls and building a direct marketing channel.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
