Coke and Pepsi put QR codes on 100+ million cans, turned packaging into updatable infrastructure

Major beverage brands transformed static labels into connected touchpoints that change messaging without reprinting a single can.

Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and other beverage giants rolled QR codes onto can packaging across their distribution networks, according to MSN reporting on the industry shift. The codes appear as small squares near brand logos, scanning to promotional pages, loyalty programs, and seasonal campaigns that the brands update server-side. A can printed six months ago now links to this week's contest. The packaging became infrastructure.

The mechanics are plain. Brands print a permanent QR code during the standard can manufacturing run. The code points to a brand-controlled URL that redirects to whatever the marketing calendar demands: a Super Bowl sweepstakes in February, a summer festival tie-in in July, a holiday recipe page in December. No new print run required. The same physical can in a Georgia warehouse and a California convenience store delivers different experiences when scanned, controlled from a single backend.

This works because it decouples the message from the medium. Traditional packaging locks in every word at press time. A limited-edition design runs its course and expires. QR infrastructure lets the brand update the call-to-action, the offer, the destination page without touching the can. The result: packaging that stays current across its entire shelf life, from production to consumption, often a span of 12-18 months in distribution. The brand pays once to print, then iterates the connected experience indefinitely.

The broader mechanism is optionality. A beverage brand ships millions of units into a fragmented retail network with no control over when each can sells. A fixed printed promo might hit shelves after the event ends. A QR redirect means the brand can retire the old campaign and launch the new one the same day, across all inventory simultaneously. The packaging becomes a live channel, not a static artifact.

The steal for a small physical-product brand starts with a single QR code on every unit. Print it near the logo or on the base of the package. Point it to a redirect service like Bitly or a custom short domain you control. On day one, link it to a simple thank-you page with care instructions and a founder note. Cost: $12/year for the domain, zero for the QR generation. The redirect URL stays the same forever; you change only the destination.

Run the first update when you have a reason: a seasonal use case, a restocking reminder, a referral offer. Write a single landing page. Update the redirect. Every unit already in the field now points to the new page. A customer who bought your product three months ago scans the same code and sees today's message. You just turned old inventory into a current marketing channel without reprinting a label.

As volume grows, layer in campaign rotation. Link the QR to different pages based on scan date, user location, or traffic source. A home-goods brand sends spring buyers to patio styling ideas, fall buyers to indoor refresh content, same code. A food product brand switches the destination from recipe one in March to recipe two in June. The packaging you shipped in January participates in the June campaign. You effectively gain 12-18 months of messaging runway from a single print run, matching the beverage giants' playbook at a founder's budget.

The pattern extends beyond beverage. Any physical product with a 2+ month shelf life or repeat usage window benefits. The QR code becomes the simplest form of connected packaging: no NFC chip cost, no app required, works on any smartphone sold since 2017. You print once, update forever, and the customer experience stays fresh across the product's entire lifecycle.

The takeaway
Print one QR code on every unit, point it to a redirect you control, update the destination as your calendar demands.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
